Hey guys, My main PC is running a single 840 evo 1tb and i use shadowplay to record gameplay. I was wondering if I can record my gameplay to nas so i can access it from my hackintosh to edit? and could i use my hackintosh to render out the video to the nas or do i need internal storage?

Map the nas as a network drive and set shadowplays output folder to that drive?

But would the nas be fast enough to record straight to it is what im wondering

honestly depends on your network, if everyting is connected via gigabit then yes, gigabit is like 125mb/s which is faster than most mechanical hard drives write speed

Depends what nas you are using to what the speed is, test it out :)

I even run games off my network server

Budget? I built a full desktop server for £200 in the UK - build a super budget PC imo, faster and more options than using a NAS, then use something like freenas as an OS (im using WHS 2012 which i already had)

You can even get dirt cheap motherboards with integrated CPUs for like no money at all

it dosent matter because it stores your footage in you c drive (dont know where) when you are recording and when you are done recording it moves the file

:D

Thats true, i forgot it records to a temp folder

i have some spare parts, well a motherboard and memory, a p8h77i with 6 sata ports and 8 gb of ram. i wont have enough money to load the things with drive but would like to be able to add drives later on, say around $400-$500 intially

Oh great, my server uses a g3220 pentium, its pretty quick with the old 64gb ssd I had lying around for a boot drive, I plan to have 4x 2or3tb WD red drives in raid 10 for performance and redundancy, just build up over time i guess

I housed mine in a fractal define mini that is silenced with foam, and I plan to make it passively cooled for utter silence (or as close to passive as i can)

Im using windows home server 2012 essentials, does a great job and was easy to set up. Also have it set up with remote access so I can access files from anywhere. my brother lives 300 miles away and backs up his macbook automatically. all my pcs boot up at night to backup

I also run plex server and have my itunes music stored there which I can listen to on my phone over 3g, and stream movies around my home-  only took a few hours to set up- its simple - expensive but powerful and easy to work as it functions just like normal windows

Thanks for the advice, but i just realized that my hackintosh is in a define mini and i have 4 sata ports left on it so if i could double that up as nas, i personally think its a better solution. but i would have to look into it more, but just keeping my options open :D

You can set Temp folder location for Shadowplay in Preferences.

Good idea, power consumption heat and noise might be a factor

I wanted to make sure that this PC was dedicated to being a server so that nothing contaminated it, and there is less risk of data loss. I plan on getting a cheap nas enclosure and shoving a 4tb drive in, as an offsite backup of the server - so that my backup has redundancy and an external backup

I lost 4 years worth of photos and computer data recently, i am NOT reliving that experiance

I have everything set to record to my second hard drive, so that the gaming loading doesn't interfere with the recording speed when recording in highest bitrate

yeah i lost 1.5tb of family photos after a system died i was so lucky that i backed up 80% on 2 external drives. but the nas is just for movies, music, photos, gameplay and some games and programs. all my university work is backed up on a raid 1 drive setup that I only use with my macbook.

You could use a network share or iSCSI target (if your NAS supports it). I personally prefer iSCSI because there's no worrying about authentication once it's connected (my Windows NAS frequently asks me to re-login to shares)
