are there any brands on that list whose product may not have a great reputation?

not much else i think, thanks for any help!

No it doesn't NEED a 3rd party cooler, but it'll help. I would change case to accommodate an air cooler instead, but its personal preference.

1 2TB SSD is cheaper than what you had, and I highly doubt you need the ROG board- so I swapped both out for something much cheaper.

You can also consider going intel. They current have really good value CPU's at the moment, although they are a little slower, probably won't notice without benchmarks. Here's at example with what you can go with (didn't include GPU, just try your best to find one decently price):

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i7-10700F 2.9 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($334.98 @ Newegg Canada)
CPU Cooler: Scythe Mugen 5 Black Edition 66.47 CFM CPU Cooler  ($80.00 @ Amazon Canada)

If you're planning to stick with 5600X, here are some answers to your questions:

Mobo is overkill for the 5600X, generally rule of thumb is to have your mobo about 50% the price of CPU. Exceptions are the 10400, ryzen 3's and i3's cause it's super cheap. You can safely go with any of the following:

MSI MAG B550M BAZOOKA

Gigabyte B550M AORUS PRO

MSI B550-A PRO

Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING

not really, but a 3rd party cooler can give you better temps and will be quieter.

it all seems good to me (the untrained eye), but does the b550 need a .. bios.. update? i think?

not sure how that works, does it require much technical know how?

I'd be surprised if it did. The 5xxx chips have been out for a good while.

hmmok ok, so there wouldn't be much finagling required, which is great.

what were you saying about changing the case to one for air cooling? is the lian li desigend for water cooling?

This depends now. On initial launch of Ryzen 5000 series, all B550 boards needed a BIOS update to run the new CPU's. Now that it's been out for awhile there are boards out there that already have the most up to date BIOS. Look for the Ryzen 5000 ready label on motherboards to confirm. A lot of B550 boards (at least good ones) have a BIOS flashback feature which allows you to update the BIOS without a supported CPU. You check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aBiTr6tpcs&ab_channel=GregSalazar

It's more like two different flavors of ice cream. Both do good and you pick what you like best. I typically look for best value CPU regardless of brand. Use to be AMD Ryzen, but recently Intel 10th gen have been looking better. At the end of the day, a CPU is a CPU regardless of brand.

It has a weird height that limits you off from a lot of air coolers if you wanted an air cooler.

ohh then what might be a better case? anything from mid to full size tower works for me!

also, since im defo planning a air cooled only (not about to crash something i built for the first time) can you explain how intake/outtake works and how people set that up?

AIOs aren't the same as custom water cooling. It's an all in one unit you just mount to the board. I prefer air myself.

Don't look at brands moreover the model. Are you taking about case brands?

The ram chips themselves mostly just come from the same three companies, everyone else buys them and slaps their name on it. The whisper M is made by the same company as the one that made the RM and is better built.

soooo

i need a model that is good for air cooling i suppose, and if the first reply there is the case, then as long as the actual hardware im getting is the same as the others then the brand won't matter that much i suppose and it'll be really good for usage!

Whisper M is a power supply.

Case wise: Look at a P400A, Meshify C, 4000D Airflow, etc
