NEW PSU MAKING GPU BUZZ

Hello,

As the title suggests I am having trouble with my psu and gpu creating a buzz noise. I have located the sound to be my gpu through diagnostically removing parts and troubleshooting however this problem only started occurring after I upgraded my psu. Everything else seems to be working smooth however there is a buzz on boot up which didnt usually happen before but could be my new aio. The only thing that I find weird and is the problem is the fact that when the gpu's fan starts spinning (When power is being added to it) or when it is constantly run a weird buzzing type noise occurs. Here is the issue and please help! The noise is relatively loud and quite a pain for my ears! I just upgraded my itx pc thats why all the parts are ITX (I bought a new case, aio and psu)

Parts:

windforce mini itx 1060 6gb

ryzen 5 3600

msi b450i gaming plus ac

16 gb ddr3 1600mhz ram

silverstone st75f-gs 750w

p400a case

1tb crucial ssd

 

In the video it occurs twice and is very noticeable (2nd-3rd second and 5th-6th second)

(I have not changed the pcie cable yet as I have not had time to do so but thats my last hope)

Can't tell 100% from that recording but sounds like a fan hitting a cable. When you put your PSU cable in your GPU, is there any cable under it near the fan? Very common for 8 pin GPU's, I believe the 1060 is one of them.

 

Might also be coil whine, in which case you should RMA the PSU. Not all manufacturers cover it under warranty but nowadays a lot of them do. It doesn't affect performance or lifespan so only RMA if it's annoying

There are no cables under it as its a one fan gpu and the pcie cable is pushed to the side nowhere near the cable. Its a brand new psu and it seems odd, would that really be coil whine though? It only happens when the gpu fans starts running and keeps going until the gpu fan turns off but im new to this scene so not sure. Thanks for the help so far though! Also the 1060 is a 6-pin connector btw.

     I went and still are going through something similar to you. My card (Zotac 2060 Super AMP) started making a buzzing noise when I was playing a game. The months went by and I found the one of the GPU's fans was doing that buzzing noise only at a certain speed and temperature + on idle temps. After trying many things I changed my PSU which was a Gigabyte 700W 80+ Bronze to a Be Quiet Straight Power 11 850W 80+ Platinum unit. While the problem hasn't faded and I still occasionally here the noise on startup like you or in game/cooling down. 

     From the list you provided above I can see that the Silverstone unit you chose is a pretty good one so it is weird that the buzzing started after changing the PSU. It is possible that a fan could be hitting something or that the PSU has a problem though before coming to a conclusion try to stop the fans of your GPU with your finger (be careful to have the fans on low rpm) and see if the sound stops.

It would be weird if the PSU causes the GPU's fan noise. When the card uses much power it creates coil whine. But it also heats up because of the power making the fans spin faster. I'd say it's coil whine but the fans start spinning at the same time due to heat. If you have a PC shop near you you can ask them if you can try a different PSU.

I could plug in my old psu and try it again. I dont remember the noise in my old computer and I migrated to a bigger case with a new PSU so that's all that has changed. If it is the PSU would I have to RMA it?

I don't think the case is a problem though you may have to try replug the old PSU to see. Probably yes. You would need RMA it. When did you buy this power supply? Ans from what store?

I bought this new PSU about 1 week ago from scorptec and got it delivered to me. It was like 100 dollars or so and fully modular (so much better)

Nice one! I'm not concerned about the 80+ Certification but it should be 80+ Gold? I don't recall seeing any Silverstone units under that. Anyways, I would like to know what was the last PSU you used and why you replaced it. Was there another problem or to get ready for an upgrade?

My last psu was a thermaltake litepower 550w and I was planning to upgrade to both fully modular and something more powerful which could suit whatever card I got my hands on

Ok got it. So I would suggest that you do a stress test. Heaven or Superposition would do the job finely. After you run the benchmark for 30ish minutes tell me if you can hear the buzzing sound when the card is cooling down. Otherwise, if you have the time change your psu to your old one. I personally would start with the stress test.

So I ran the stress test for 2 hours and my GPU got up to about 67c and no noise at all. It seems the noise only happens when the card is running idle/light browsing like google at 55c-59c and the fans are in-between the phase of starting and stopping. What would I do now? We have essentially found the culprit I would assume its that middle phase where the fans start and stop continuously because it sits between the temperature that the fans should start or stop.

Sorry for taking a long time to respond. Same happens to me. When my card is close to 33-40 (idle temperatures) it sometimes buzzes. Now if you are ok with it you can use MSI Afterburner to set a custom fan speed where your fans are always running above the rpm when they make the buzzing noise. Because I wrote this reply in a hurry, I hope that what I said above is understandable. If you have any questions I will try to answer them!

I have noticed that in the higher end cards there is a high chance of getting random coil whine like noises out of them at random and different loads / power draws.

 

I've had it in the last 3 of 4 GPU's on 4 different PSU's. unfortunately if you have a card with Coil Whine, there is no fix. and often GPU manufacturers will not include coil whine as a warrantied defect.

Sadly thats what I've done. A quieter case might help as well. Plus moving the case into an area further away if possible.

 

its sad that this "clicking" or coil whine issue is so prevelant. And it's sad there's no recourse for us when it occurs. But so far it's just an annoyance. The devices are working 100% as intended. It's just noisy.

I had a Corsair power supply do this and it's super annoying. Nothing you can do about it unfortunately.

What actually is it? How could it be coil whine if it only happens during startup and its practically brand new?
