Those keys are a gray area, so "trusted" should be taken with a mountain of salt.

If they haven't changed policy, Windows 10 is free can run unactivated. It just has some restrictions like not being able to change theme or wallpaper and a watermark in the corner. You can just install it and save up until you can afford a full license.

[Edit] Though Microsoft isn't actively enforcing anything, it is intended for you to buy a license to use it long term and to its full functionality and their EULA does state you are not allowed to use an unlicensed copy.

It's not free. It's preview for which you are expected to pay if you plan to use it full time. Otherwise, its just like piracy.

Ah. I guess because I haven't heard about anyone getting shut down by MS for not activating has made me consider it "free". I don't consider it piracy if they offer what is basically an unlimited trial, but all I can find now on the Microsoft site is links to buy Win10 so I guess they removed the trial download or I completely misremember.

The fact that there are still restrictions should make it obvious that preview isn't intended for long term use. Changing wallpaper is minor thing, but any other things which would go around those set restrictions are same as cracking the activation requirements.

If you want completely free OS, Linux exists. There are no completely free versions of Windows..

I wasn't advocating attempts to circumvent the restrictions, simply to run it unactivated until they could buy a license.

The problem is that you were (falsely) calling it free.
That suggests that it's meant to be used for free forever. Now, forum staff have no stance in this matter. It annoys me personally that anyone would suggest using something paid for free for any reason.

I agree with that, they do not advertise a free tier and their EULA says requiring a license so it can't be considered free. I have updated my response. I share your opinion that you should buy a license. That it was your opinion and not a moderator's was clear to/assumed by me 🙂 (for better or for worse haha).

I am however also of the opinion that if you care about people not doing this, then don't allow them to do it in the first place, like every licensed software I have used till date does. That's not to say I am not responsible for obtaining a license for whatever I want to use, but they can easily implement a time limit on unactivated versions instead of only caring about how many PCs run Windows. It's like letting people walk into your car shop and just drive away with a new car, only giving them a verbal reminder "hey you are supposed to buy it first" without further consequences.

So yeah, not disagreeing with what you are saying at all regarding licenses, but in my eyes they are weakening their position by not seeming to care one bit.
