Hi! I am looking up for parts for a friend's build. I've made this so far:

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/rTHDYg

We both know the GPUs are super expensive right now but yknow, not much we can do about it!

I was told the mobo is a bit expensive but couldn't find anything else, not sure what to look for!

Any idea to lower the general price ?

Budget (including currency): max 2k CAD

Country: Canada, Qc

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: gaming

Put more money into your power supply. Get something like an RM unit from corsair. All else seems fine enough.

Do not pay 1100$ for a 3060.

I found the 3060 for 980$ (EVGA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 XC Gaming, 12G-P5-3657-KR, 12GB GDDR6, Dual-Fan, Metal Backplate : Amazon.ca: Electronics), but it's not like he has a choice at this point ? What else could he do other than wait for months hoping it'll go down ? Seems like everyone keeps on saying it'll but that's what everyone has been saying for months.

I changed the PSU for 750W gold, he just went "f*ck it" when I told him, for 99 instead of 60 + 20 shipping, not that much difference at that point.

I switched the mobo as @Downkey suggested, the memory too. And for the price difference I'll just take the SSD on amazon for 5$ more.

No he has a choice.

The 3060 isn't the best value card.

Go for the AMD RX 6700XT instead. Outperforms a 3060TI and is available for 1000$.

And with a bit of of allocating (No tomahawk Mobo needed, better Ram. Other drive config) you can have a great system!

With some optimization you can sneak in a 5800x

Though you may wanna ditch the 5800x and upgrade the ssd instead to a 1tb ssd like the kingston a2000

Yeah you could, but for gaming and light streaming, a 5800X is overkill.

Rather spend the money on a more quality SSD, Case and Ram.

Also the Motherboard is only mATX, so with a GPU installed basically no other PCIe Slot usable.

So he texted me this morning and he went to buy a 3060 for 800 to a scalper here, with the taxes is 3-400$ less then on amazon.

He most probably will never need another PCIe slot anyway, so there's that 😬. Anyway isn't there 2 on the B550-A Pro ?

I don't really like recommending 500gb + 2tb to "noobs", it's harder to manage and decide what to install where, so a 1tb SSD is a safer bet, even if a bit pricy.

I'm also not one to recommend AMD for GPUs (please don't kill me), I've hard too many bad experiences as a dev, a gamer and with their junk ass app. At this point other than their apps it's more a habit then an actual "I looked and preferred that one to that one" .

So with the GPU it ends up around (900 + tax) + 800. It's not that bad, I think he got a really nice CPU and for his small games and his 1080, 60fps the GPU will be more then enough for quite a while, even though I understand it's still not worth 800$. At least he got the BestBuy receipt with it, now he can admire how much he was scalped for.

Hopefully we can manage to physically build it 👌

edit:

Thanks to everyone and specially @Downkey for a whole build really close to the one we already had, it was the first time I asked for a build here. I'm not sure why I'm impressed by how fast you guys responded but still, appreciated !
