Not enough information for me at least to diagnose.  The trouble shooting section has some pinned posts about what kind of information is needed.  I got some but not enough.

from what I can derive, it’s a probably non windows machine that may have some kind of Linux on it.  VLC runs on everything but potplayer doesn’t so it can’t be a mac.  Windows has special stuff but it isn’t being used so probably not windows.  Might still be some modded “smart” tv, or some other type of ARM based console type machine, but also might be an old pc.  Or a new PC with windows on it possibly running a VM or doing a dual boot or any of a number of other things Using a CISC type cpu instead of RISC.  Anyway it’s playing video to a device of some sort rather than OTA so not a traditional tv.  Could be an OTA “smart” or non-smart tv but might be a monitor, and it’s having some sort of problem with a hard crash of some type that hasn’t been affected by a change of video player which was originally VLC.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Well that helps. Knocks it down to Some sort of PC running windows10home.  No info on the output source. Assuming it’s the PC that is the issue, it could be gpu based.  Video isn’t a very heavy load so memory is somewhat unlikely but it’s cheap if a bit time consuming to check. Memtest86 for that, generally. Ryzen or intel? With ryzen keeping  drivers updated is reportedly key for all kinds of stuff. Could also be the storage medium.  Again low probability. Does it halt in a different place each time or the exact same place?

680 does in fact not match the rest of the machine.  In this current market one takes what one can get though. It’s better than your iGPU… which is a thought… video playback is totally within the power of an iGPU so you actually have 2 useful GPUs and can test.  Running off the mobo video could possibly solve the issue.

should i also check to see if my bios is up to date and anything else i should be looking for and yes i built the pc just when the 3000 series gpu was coming out figuring i would snatch one up but it seems they are impossible to get at a decent price

You’ve got intel not ryzen so it’s less important. I don’t hear much about intel bios stuff so I assume no.  It’s a weak assumption though.  If the iGPU works or doesn’t it means a few different things. They’re not only separate but are of radically different ages and intel stuff may try to use both depending what it happens to do.  I’ve heard of people using newer intel iGPUs  to access cards with no video out.  It’s apparently quite complicated, but has something to do with laptops switching between discrete or onboard gpu as it sees fit. Might have something to do with your issue. I don’t know.
