So I am building a NAS for my house soon and would like your opinion on a couple of things

How much more performance is I SSD cache?

How much RAM should I have?

Do I need reds, or couild I use WD blue?

I am planning on four HDD drives in RAID 10 for speed and security

Thoughts?

(Sorry for grammar but sitting at musical practice on my tablet)

You can't really do SSD caching unless you want to spend a lot on server parts and have some overly complex server. For FreeNAS the rule of thumb is 1GB per terabyte plus some for the OS due to the type of filesystem FreeNAS uses but there's alteratives like using Ubuntu with Samba. Use Reds as they're made for 24/7 use and there's a lot less vibration so they have a longer life span. Raid 10 is a very wise choice. You could always just buy a HDD-less NAS from Synology or one of the other great brands.

I seen that wendel and logan mentioned ssd cache for a nas with free nas, and is it for total tb of RAM for free nas or just usable, as 16 gb of RAM is very expensive. I'll  use the reds, looking on pc part picker I thought they were more expensive than they are

The RAM is for FreeNAS and you'll need a LGA 1150 server board as you need ECC, I would recommend around 20GB RAM, I guess you can cache if you want to but Raid 10 is already pretty fast.

You could use normal RAM on a normal board but it's highly recommend you use server parts.

Well this build isn't intended to be the best as the big issue is for all of it, my computer needs to be quieter and I need ALOT of reliable storage
