I don't really need anything more than a 3570k right now so upgrading would be kinda pointless unless it's my only option.

Well it isn't your only option, that's why buying a new motherboard/entire new platform is a last resort. Reseating the CMOS battery is a good idea for sure, and not to mention if that doesn't work you can deal with it... workaround's either just not shutting off your computer very frequently or being patient and keep trying until it finally does boot.

Most CMOS batteries are just regular-ass CR2032 batteries you can find at the convenience store, Target, Walmart, super common. Check your battery type before buying anything, though.

Hello,

I recently got this used PC and lately whenever I try to boot it doesn't always post.

One of three things happen.

1) the PC starts up as normal, I see the gigabyte logo and windows loading screen.

2) The PC makes no noise at all ( no beeps for post but fans and everything turn on as normal)

3) the PC makes a long beep noise followed by a second beep shortly after, nothing appears on screen and I have to hard shut down and re power on the PC.

In both scenarios 2&3 it sometimes takes several attempts (even up to 6-8) of hard powering down and rebooting to get a normal working start up.

System specs:

3570k running stock speeds

Gigabyte z77 Mobo

GTX 970 stock

16gb DDR3 running 1333mhz (for trouble shooting)

500GB HDD as misc. Storage

240GB SSD for boot drive (windows 10 64bit installed)

EVGA 500W PSU

Thanks for the support.

P.S I had been using this system for several days before this started to happen. No components were swapped out or changed and I have no spares to try.

Usually the fault of a bad or dying motherboard. Being that Z77 is such an old platform (Ivy Bridge), it's pretty reasonable to believe the motherboard might be dying.

Personally, I'd just deal with it until the computer doesn't work at all, and then use that as an opportunity to switch to a new platform, because as it is, buying a new motherboard for your i5-3570K would be quite a waste of money as you're likely to need to replace the whole platform in a few years anyways due to bad performance as a result of age.

Maybe try to swap the motherboard battery.

This is the CMOS battery right? Sorry not entirely sure. Can I just order one and swap it in?
