Flawless Upgrade

Go to solution Solved by X1XNobleX1X,

Hello TechTippers!

I recently bought a new Laptop, a Toshiba S55T-A5161, upgrading from my old L850D. I had issues with the L850D because I was abusive towards it. Not physically, well yeah physically. Went through Linux/Windows OS so much I made it bipolar. (Not Funny!) But, what I also did was upgrade the 4GB DDR3 RAM to 16GB, and the 500GB HDD to a 120GB SSD.

This is all on the L850D. After switching Operating Systems and Harddrives, some of my more important drivers got erased. (Anything related to Networking, anything related to the USB 3.0 ports, so no WiFi no Ethernet).

My new laptop has a ton of more Drivers than my old one. My HDD is slow and loud and I want to stab it in the disk. I want to know what I will need to do to upgrade to an SSD. Im looking at some Intel SSDs 128GB (I have externals for storage)

I would like to know the safer better option.

1. Install SSD and use an OEM Win 8.1 Pro disk I have (Legit Copy)

2. Plug the SSD into my computer and clone everything.

I dont want to deal with losing my Drivers, I don't have a bunch of crap on my computer that is taking up space. I don't want some expensive top of the line SSD. My old one was a Kingston HyperX 120GB. I just miss my Boot Speeds and the silence.

If #2 Wins, what is the best Cloning Software that has the most reliability.

Thanks for all the future answers!

Download all the drivers before you upgrade and only download the ones you need.

To be honest all you really need is the LAN and WAN drivers, Bluetooth, Nvidia display driver, USB 3.0 and Intel display driver. Windows will automatically update what ever else it needs.

OR: If you don't want to do that, you can always buy a Samsung 840 Pro SSD and install the Migration software that is provided and create a replicated image of your laptop.

Would the Mitigation be safer? My old laptop never updated the Ethernet Driver, nor could I find it, which slowly ruined my computer running some random drivers. To the point where I got AppHangB1Errors if my computer was running on battery power and used IE FireFox or Chrome. Then started on Spotify then slowly took over Minecraft. The Level 2 MS Tech couldn't figure it out either.

Starting fresh would be best, migration will possibly have the same effect that you were having before.

Above I listed the drivers you should have.

Here is the LAN Driver/ Other drivers I listed: http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1200007466

Okay, best anyways. I have all this Toshiba Crap I'll never use. So, find all the Drivers you listed, match my versions with them and download that onto a USB Drive, install them all, run all the updates, etc. I'd really like to go Intel for the SSD. Would you say Yay? Or Nay and go with a Samsung SSD? I'm not looking for amazing performance. Just anything equal to or better than the Kingston HyperX.

Also, thanks for the help. :)

I love my Intel 520 which I use as my boot drive. I'm assuming you're talking about the Intel 730?

If you want to get a Intel, get a Intel. I only recommend the Samsung as it has migration software.

Was actually looking at the 530 Series.

The 730 is kinda overkill for me. Not looking to spend a crapload. Space really doesnt bother me. I have like 10TB in external HDDs. The 520 was out of stock, but did look very good.
