Don't stack pads. Buy the correct ones and do the job properly.

It also helps to have a digital micrometer to measure the edges and the compressed part of the original pads (helps to compare them).

For pad 'experimentation", you can use cheap Amazon "AIYUNNI" pads.  When testing pads, make sure you have proper and full core to heatsink contact.  I like to test by applying a small dab of toothpaste on each VRM, VRAM And center of CPU, then screw the heatsink and see if everything spread perfectly.

 

Once you know exactly what pads to use, I would buy Gelid Extreme pads.  These are soft, compressible, and conform very well.
