So for video encoding, would I notice a big difference? Mine currently runs 3.9 all core...

Yeah, the extra cores would come in very handy. I'd expect a 5-10% decrease in encoding times depending on application.

And with an RX 480 8gb, would I be able to crank better frame rates at 1080p?

Probably not that much, but you might get an extra 10 FPS at your current settings (don't quote me on that, it would depend on game)

If you want to upgrade, upgrade, don't cheap out. Never buy stuff becasue it is cheap, buy stuff becasue it is good.

I mean a 3700x is better no questions asked, it can help with 1% low in gaming, and quicker encoding, etc. But if you don't needed that bad, just don't bother. And I doubt you can trade in your 2600x with 20 bucks. If you sell your 2600x, it would probably be at a lower price.

If you really want to upgrade now. A used 5800x is about 350 bucks on ebay, a 10850k is at similar price. It should be good for 4 years.

My adivce would be save more money, next year zen 4 will come out, and gpu prices should fall. Just save money untill then. Incremental upgrades waste money in the long term.

I mean if you are doing video encoding all day for work, and your budget is really limited, this upgrade make sense. But if you are just casual gaming and editing, just wait.

I mean, if it's a $20 upgrade, sure why not.

So youre assuming that he can sell a 3 year old CPU thats outclassed in every way at NEW MSRP? Youre a bad upgrade advisor.

To OP:

If you own a B450/X470 board, i would simply wait till you can afford a 5600X when theyre back in stock globally. Itll be a bigger upgrade down the line than a 3700x in IPC and if youre just gaming that ipc gain will benefit you more than more core. But overall, i think it can still handle 3060Ti so if youre interested in low end 1440p, that can be an option too but then that CPU will be your Achilles heel.

If you own a B350/X370 board, Wait for Ryzen 8000 series. Itll be DDR5, and in a new platform so you can kill 3 birds with 1 stone.

He said local prices were within $20-30. I was going off of what was said, and honestly looking at my area, it doesn't seem too unlikely.

Ebay prices verify that claim that they're close to $30 if you get lucky, and with craigslist or something you might get even better deal.
