Apparently it supports up to 9.5mm thick drives and needs <=1.5GB.

It's up to you if you put an SSD in your system, as it varies from title to title. Regarding load times. 

The ssd is only for more storage without adding moving parts

Yeah, pretty much any 2.5" SATA drive with a 9.5mm or 7mm Z-height, with I believe a 1.5TB size limit. I've heard of people getting 2TB to work but it only reads 1.5TB.

 

I have a Samsung 850 Evo 500GB in one of my Slims (it's also had an 840 Evo 250GB) and a T-Force Vulcan 250GB in my other one (it's also had an Intel 545S 128GB).
