HI I am new to pc gaming and i am currently using a VGA cable to connect my monitor to my desktop so i was wondering about a few things:

  • What is the difference between DVI, VGA, HDMI and Display Port?
  • What is the difference between dual link DVI and DVI?
  • And Finally out of all these cables which is the best to use if you are gaming?

All the advice and help is appreciated thanks.

There really isnt much differance between hdmi and dvi when it comes to video images none that the eye can see. The only real differance there is that hdmi can also transmit audio signals aswell. Display port is the newest form of media cabling and transfer alot more information then an hdmi cable it is primarily used for 2560x1600 moniters becuase that high of a resoloution requires a cable that can transfer more information. I would use the DVI cables for both moniters you wont be unhappy

VGA is used in transmitting an analog signal to the monitor.

DVI is pretty much the same as VGA,just that it's digital signal, which is way better.

HDMI is DVI that can also send audio.

DisplayPort is the newest, and has the highest bandwith. It can carry pretty much any form of data.

Just stay way from VGA.If you have a high framerate monitor or a high resolution on use DVI or DisplayPort.

DVI is a digital cable, but doesn't carry audio. VGA is an analog cable and should die in a fire. HDMI is a digital cable that does carry audio. Display port is a digital cable that doesn't carry audio(I think) (supports 4K at 60Hz)

Dual link DVI can push 2560x1600, and single link doesn't (can't remember what it actually supports)

If you're using 1080p, I'd go for DVI for the locking connectors, but you'll need to have a way of connecting audio. For higher res, Display Port is the best.

I know HDMI, VGA and single DVI have 1080p as max resolution they can output natively. I believe dual link DVI allows for a higher resolution. HDMI allows audio to be transfered along with video. DisplayPort can show the highest resolution of the outputs you listed.

Unless you're gaming above 1080, HDMI or DVI will be enough.

So If i use dual link dvi how will i get audio

By connecting speakers directly to your PC

HDMI carries audio over the cable to the display for instance to send sound to a TV
