I have been browsing through other similar threads for a few days and piecing some information together. I'm looking for some validation or corrections on the build below based on the requirements before I start shipping money off to Amazon and Newegg. If you see any flaws in these specs, be it underpowered or overpowered, please let me know.

Replacing: Old laptop running ubuntu 18.04 and a synology nas with 2TB drive

Budget: $500 USD (not including HDD storage)

Requirements/usage: Home media server (plex) / NAS with some other light usage

  • Currently no more than two simultaneous streams with transcoding at 1080p.
    • In the future, up to four streams and support for at least 1 4K UHD to a Shield TV Pro (6-8 months out)
  • Low power consumption where possible for a 24/7 media server
  • Unraid possibly?
    • Not sure if this is necessary, but will want raid protection once running 3-4 drives
  • I will soon add a bluray drive to improve the current ripping situation, likely running 'Automated Ripping Machine'

For now, I will probably only buy one or two of the 8TB drives with plans for a few more in the future. I anticipate the 4 2.5" bay capacity of the case above should satisfy my needs for at least a few years with 8tb drives.

Thank you
