What to do with my old graphics card?

I got really lucky and was able to get a $600 3070 TI through Newegg shuffle. I was wondering what the ethical thing to do with my 5700 XT would be? I live in a city (Pittsburgh), so selling it on FB marketplace wouldn’t be a huge issue. I just don’t know how much is fair or if I should just try to get as much as I can for it.

 

I take really good care of my components and the 5700 XT is in great shape. I’ve also never used it for mining, so I’m not really concerned about it going bad on someone.

If you need the money, flip it for market price, you'd be stupid to do MSRP or lower.

 

But I would strongly suggest keeping it as a backup cause if your 3070ti dies for some reason, you'll have a backup option.

Try to think of any friend or family that you might give it to or sell it to at a reasonable price. If you don't have any of those, then sell it for as much as you can get for it to a stranger on FB marketplace.

 

The market conditions that have lead to the current GPU shortage are not your fault. It is therefore not unethical for you to sell your GPU to someone at it's current market value. It would be silly for you to do otherwise.

Build another machine for sale or someone you know?  Along with the options above... it's your call.  What do you want to do with it?

 

Also, I understand the sentiment behind "I take really good care of my components" but the 99.99% of people put a card in and then use it.  Not a big deal, they'll all in good shape so don't think you'll get some bump in price for having that.

What's unethical is buying something you don't want and don't need just so you can mark it up and flip it for a profit (scalpers with their bots). There's nothing wrong with selling your used hardware at whatever the market is for it.

 

However, like others have suggested, I'd keep it unless you absolutely need the cash. If god forbid anything should happen to the 3070 Ti you have now, whatever profit you made on the 5700 XT will quickly fade when you're trying to find something to get your PC back up and running in a panic.

Selling something for more than you paid isn't unethical - that's just how markets work. I sell computers that I get for free on occasion. I don't make tons of money on them, but do I feel bad for selling something I got for free? Nope.

I should sell it or if you have a brother or sister and they like to play games you could give it to them

IMO sell it, you won the lottery with the Newegg shuffle. Your not saving anyone money by not selling it, your preventing someone looking for a card from getting one that presumably is in 100% working order.

 

If your 3070 ti is working the odds of it dieing are so low, keeping the old one in a box is useless IMO. It will never resell this high again.

 

If you keep it, it's silly not to mine on it.

 

By not selling it your essentially declining to accept the shuffle prize.

The best thing that could possibly happen with this card is that it ends up in someone else's PC and stays in use for another several years. The ethical thing to do is anything that keeps it out of a landfill.

 

Unless you want to give it to a friend or something, sell it for somewhere around the current going price. You benefit, and so does the person who bought from you instead of a scalper.
