So Amazon is littered with stuff like this, which is cool, because I need something like that for work. Thing is, there are lots of much cheaper options out there with 15.6" 1080p IPS displays for a whole lot less than that Samsung...but they all have Chinese brand names (or AOC). Does anyone here have experience with one of those portable displays or another, or can recommend/dissuade me from crappy ones?

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

The Asus MB169B+ comes to mind, used for a client's portable PC a little while ago and it satisfies work on the go uses pretty adequately. Should be a bit cheaper, closer to the $150 price point.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

Sounds like you’re looking for portable monitor reviews.  There should be quite a few loose on the internet.   LTT did a few.  The only one  I even vaguely remember is some Kickstarter thing involving a folding rear projector screen or something.  It was a while ago. I don’t remember it very well. My memory is it was considered underwhelming.
Nationality of electronics is a bit problematic. Most Manufacturers will produce things where parts are made in multiple countries. LCD monitors are mostly about the LCD panel, at least as far as visuals go.  So the only way I see for nationality to play a role here is in the panel.  It’s really most of what one of these devices is.

LCD video panels are generally only made in China, Korea, and perhaps still to some degree Japan.  Japan will be Sony or perhaps Panasonic or something else, Korea will be LG or Samsung, and pretty much everything else will be mainland China. Might or might not be some Taiwanese ones as well. I don’t know.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
