Parts Suggestions

Hi! I've assembled a PC before but never really had the opportunity to pick out the parts on my own... we're trying to build a workstation PC that can run R scripts. The scripts are incredibly large and are ram and cpu intensive. We also need it for some 3D mapping. Here are the specs that we came up with. Any gpu suggestions are greatly appreciated since we haven't decided on one yet:

 

CPU: Intel Core i7, 8-Core

Motherboard: ASUS TUF Z390-Plus 

Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 64GB DDR4 3600

Power Supply: CORSAIR RMx Series RM850x CP-9020180-NA 850W

SSD: Western Digital WD BLACK SN750 NVMe M.2 2280 1TB

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S chromax

OS: Ubuntu

Didnyou consider any AMD cpu?

 

Why a  3 generations back cpu and motherboard?

 

GPU is likely going to be decided by budget. Can your R environment use gpu acceleration?

Hi @brob thanks for your reply! This list was built out by our technician so I am not entirely sure about why he chose them but I can try and explain...

 

Our budget is around 3k. We just started using R for some analyses and haven't really found a way to make it run faster (some of our bigger scripts can run for a whole day or two especially the ones with spatial data). Not really sure about the motherboard but any suggestions would be helpful 🙂 We mostly just want something that can support 128GB max memory for future expansion. For the CPU, I guess we've just never used AMD before... 😅

Unless your R libraries can use the gpu for computation or you use software with very graphical output, the onchip gpu of Intel cpu should be fine.

That cpu and board is a recipe for disaster. Not sure why you wouldn't get the i9 10900 if you need lots of cores. It is $75 cheaper. Also that cooler is way too expensive. You can get a Scythe Fuma 2 for $59.95.

Not a question of cores but clock. Bottom line is i9-11900 has highest clock.

No it doesn't. They both boost to 5.2GHz. Except the 11900 wouldn't on that board.

Here are a couple of options depending on whether you want AMD or Intel. There is also the i9 10900 if you wanted more cores. Not sure what sort of gpu you would require, but they are pretty hard to get hold of at the minute. If you can get by with onboard graphics then that would limit you to Intel, as AMD don't have any 8 core+ with graphics.

Thanks for this @lee32uk! As for the GPU, we'll use this PC for a lot of mapping... we use ArcGIS for mapping and sometimes blender for our AR Sandbox...

Given current gpu availability and pricing your choice is going to come down to budget and what is available from your merchants.

 

Ideally you will be able to get an RTX 3070 or better gpu. If you do, a suitably higher capacity psu will be required.

Yeah... not a lot of gpu options at the moment so we might just buy an i9 cpu and upgrade later on. If we do choose RTX 3070 in the future, how much psu capacity would be needed? Thanks again @brob!

Nvidia recommends a 650W unit for an RTX 3070 but the general user consensus is at least 750W. I would suggest you consider an 850W psu as that would give you the flexibility to consider higher performance gpu should budget and availability allow.

The Gigabyte B560M Aorus Pro AX in my list is a much better option. No real point getting Z490 as the cpu is locked. The Aorus Pro also has a better VRM than the B560 Tomahawk so no point paying more for that.

 

Just be aware that the top M.2 slot will be disabled with a 10th gen cpu.
