I dont know why but i have been thinking about this for like 2 days now and in the known uneverse theres a operating sistem from microsoft, from linux (correct me if im wrong here) and the last one that's coming is steam OS, if there are any others please note them.

So my idea is, well not so much of an idea more of a thinking thing, why are there only those 2-3 OSes? why arent there more of them.
Than i came to some conclusions: a) it's F'ing hard to program that

b ) eaven if it is programed you wount be compatible whit other programs

                                                       c) and some others too much thinking for me in 5 minutes....

But what the most i would like is to see more operating Systems out there, im suprised that this kind of a thing didnt start like years ago, but never the les no one is speaking about it...

Same for mobile operating systems, if your OS isn't big developers will not bother developing for it and it will not have any software to run.

This is a problem, because there is a kind of Duopoly between Windows and OSX ( okay, and a really small bit of Linux ).

Um... theres a few : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:X86_operating_systems

The main family of Operating Systems are Windows, *nix, OSX and Android though.

SteamOS is Ubuntu based, which is in the Linux family. Along with Android.

Then again OSX could be in the *nix family too...

there are hundreds of operating systems, probably hundreds of thousands to be honest, you just know the mainstream ones. you're also disregarding mac OS as an operating system, lol.

EDIT - deleted what i said before wrong thread :P

I guess because there isn't that much benefit to writing your own OS, it is extremely hard and costs alot of time money and man hours.

For what most people need they can create a specific program to carry out that function/task.

So really we have TOO many operating systems. Its a shame they cant all work on all platforms

you got into my line of thinking a bit.

OK i sad if im wrong do correct me, but what i wanted to say is, why is there only let's say windows 7 users, ubutu users, andrioid users etc, you know what im saying now? why arent there more of people let's say freelancing?

there are hundreds of operating systems, probably hundreds of thousands to be honest, you just know the mainstream ones. you're also disregarding mac OS as an operating system, lol.

awnser above this one.

why exactly do we need more OSs?

Why not? why people would only use let's say windows 7 or any other when they "could" make there own that would lets say maybe be better than any other?

Here i can see that it's all based on debian, all others are upgrades like windows 95 to windows 7

Atari 2600JR, even though i was born in 1990 (and this came out in 1977)

Then we got a sega mega drive 2

When i was like 6, we got a Playstation 1 - and since then I have had them all

i think you might be in the wrong thread buddy.

that said as the others pointed out above there are LOADS of different os's out there, if you want variation Linux has a bunch of different flavors, but i don't really understand why you would want to see more operating systems.

because that's just not how it works, an os like windows 7 has hundreds of people working behind it for several years with millions and millions of dollars in funding, and then theres the compatibility issues, why do alot of people steer away from linux and using wndows instead? because Linux requires effort and programs don't always work right off the bat without some tweaking, windows is more widely supported.

edit: well hundreds of people might be slight exaggeration but you get the picture.

Most of them are based on Debian, Slackware and Red Hat. But if you count SteamOS and Ubuntu (or Chrome OS and Gentoo) as 2 OSes, all of them should be counted as individual OSes.

You can never compete with large companies like Microsoft. They have lots of resources. The reason for Ubuntu (and some other linux distros) being successful is that they have a relatively large user base compared to other distros and many people are willing to contribute. If you are starting a new OS on your own, you need to put a lot of time and effort in it. Very few people are willing to do that.

yeah i get you, and you just named one of the problems i sad in my starting post :) i have been thinking abaut this the last 2 days, and those where my conclusions.

But it's a shame that theere isnt that much freelancing going on in the world.

well, im a police officer and only thing we used ubutu was to see how it works and how it is easyer to hack systems whit ubutu (brute force i think) than let's say whit windows.
