Hello

I am using an old Asus gaming laptop and want a new computer. I will be using this for Web browsing, music/podcast, Twitch (viewer), Minecraft, Green Hell, Fall Out 4, and whatever my kids play.

I have one Acer LED monitor(2yr old) and don't want to upgrade right now.

Can you help future proof this setup, I want to keep it at least 4 years.

Your help is appreciated!

The hard one lately is graphics cards the console refresh, the scalpers and the chip shortage all hit at the same time and demand has been greater than supply for some time.  The result is prices for video cards are crazy.  The weird bit is it’s no too bad for the rest of it with a possible exception being CPUs. MsRP has gone out the window.  AMD CPUs would be a better buy except they tend to be marked up to a silly premium.  Consumer grade computer equipment is NOT the top of the food chain.  The result is it’s basically always price performance with consumer stuff.  For example the 5800x was panned as a bad chip not because of its capabilities but because of its price/performance compared to other available chips.  The thing actually works fine.  Because pricing went crazy the 5800x is actually selling better because the AMD chips that could beat it are frequently flat out are not gettable. This has made some intel stuff a much better price/performance deal because while AMD is having supply issues intel is not, so the intel stuff is at msrp while the AMD stuff is retailing well above it.

in your case this comes together to make building a system to a budget somewhat difficult because the prices for different parts are subject to change without notice. One could do so without a graphics card and add that later, or with an on die gpu and except low performance.  On die GPUs are not great right now..  they’ve made massive strides from last generation. 1080p low gaming vs 720p low gaming, but it’s still not enough for a lot of people.  If you did this an 11700k or possibly one of the new AMD chips with better than Vega graphics would likely be the way to go.  The 11700k specifically to get the Xe GPU.  It’s apparently not on the 11700 for whatever reason.  I personally think an 11400 with Xe and a 1080p monitor would be a not so bad matchup.  Afaik there’s no such animal though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
