Is a 4-core 16GB RAM too overkill for a fileserver?

We bought a Lenovo SR250 with my company to host a fileserver with TrueNAS. Do you guys think is too overkill? I mean, we can use the resources with a VM anyway, but mmm...

It has a Xeon E-2224 with 16GB RAM.

I mean... you don't save much by buying less than that. Arguing against it cost more in other peoples time than was spent on that.

Usually you ask these kind of questions before you buy something. My fileserver runs on a 4690k and 16 GB RAM as well, so I'm not really one to talk...

My personal file server also uses a quad core, a 2400G, and it's definitely overkill for me lol. Server only sees access from 1 user at a time and literally only manages files, no encoding or vm or whatever 😄

The 16gb of ram are pretty useless for me too but whatever. It's better to have it than to need it 😉

It does run a Plex server as well, but since my setup allows for Direct Play of everything it still doesn't do anything. Just see it as having some extra horsepower in hiding for the odd case where you do need it.
