Hi!

I recently had an influx of cash and I wanted to plan and build a server. However, being a total amateur at server building and... husbandry(?), I decided to ask for help from you fine folks!

I would like this server to do the following things.

1. Handle my professional email. I currently am using an email address I created when I was in the 8th grade and gmail was in beta, and although its great and well for my personal email, the name is... decidedly childish to put it lightly, and I would think that having Admin@myname.com on a resume would be a bit more impressive.

2. Have media and common files accessible from any system in the house. Fairly standard.

3. Handle uploads to youtube and other sites, and handle downloads.

4. Have the capability at least of becoming a game server in the future, or simultaneously if possible (minecraft, TTT, etc.)

So yeah, I apologize if your reaction to this post is "Yeah, literally any server on earth can do that. Idiot." but I genuinely have no clue here.

As far as budget I would like to spend less than $500.

Side thought, would it be worth the work/expense to run my server on a VPN? For... protection? Also, any thoughts on a firewall or somesuch?

Thanks in advance!

Rex

I will still say for less that $500 you really wont get much performance and to do all you want to do its pretty much impossible.

I would suggest save a bit more or upgrade your rig or something.
