That's anything but a simple question. Minecraft is a sandbox game - for many people the quintessential sandbox game - and the possibilities are pretty much unlimited, within the scope of everything being made from 1m*1m cubes. It's less a game, and more a tool to play whatever game you want to use it for.

You could just look up some YouTube videos of it - make sure you check out ones from a wide range of channels as everyone has their own style - and think "would I like to be doing that"?

But frankly I'd suggest that you just buy a copy and jump in, if you can afford it. Minecraft Java Edition is - or at least was until recently - the best selling game of all time, and you don't get a better endorsement than that.

Basically the first objective is to gather materials and not die.

Or if you just want to build stuff you could always play in creative mode so you don't have to worry about surviving.

Think of it as a randomly generated survival / open world game

Yes, that's exactly what it is (though as I say, it doesn't have to be survivial)

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

so, is it like clash of clans?

i watched some videos. some were building stuff but how they did that idk and some were just destroying stuff.

Thank you for your response!

Sorry for the slow response, I was on holiday without my computer.

If you want to really see what can be achieved building in Minecraft creative mode, there are two channels in particular that I recommend: MumboJumbo and Grian. Their styles are very different (Mumbo focusses mainly on complex contraptions using the redstone mechanics, which you can think of as a sort of electricity I guess? not quite sure how to explain it; Grian focusses on producing buildings which have beautiful design and look pleasing). What's good about both of these channels is that you get to see snippets of the experimentation and thought that goes into creating them - not just the end result - so you can get a feel of what it's like to build something from the ground up.

Minecraft is more of a game to help you develop your imagination. The guys who wrote the posts above me are absolutely right in their judgement. You can still play this game with your kids. Here's a website with a great list of servers https://best-minecraft-servers.co/ . My kids, by the way, are much better at building than I am. There are millions of servers and add-ons for this game. I recommend you check out DanTDM's YouTube channel. It's right at the top.
