Hey all!

So I'm currently looking to build a new PC to replace mine, and I was looking to get some advice on my proposed setup to see what if any major bottlenecks may occur. The most intensive use case for my PC right now is some light gaming, but I plan to play a lot more once I have a more capable machine. Essentially, I want to have something that will be able to play most AAA games (COD, Battlefield, Cyberpunk, etc.) at relatively high settings with decent (60-144) framerates.

So, here's what I'm thinking so far..

Location: US

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X
Cooling: Corsair iCue H150i Elite Capellix
Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge

Graphics Card: RTX 3060ti FE or 3070 FE (whenever I can get my hands on them haha)

RAM: 4x 8GB sticks of 3.2GHz Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro

Case: Corsair iCue 5000X (Black)
PSU: Corsair RMx 850W 80 Plus Gold Modular

Storage: Samsung 980 Pro M.2 1TB & Samsung 860 Evo 1TB

OS: Windows 10 Home

- Other Peripherals -

Monitors: 2x LG 27" Ultra Gear QHD IPS at 1440p 144Hz

Keyboard: Razer BLackWidow V3 Mini w/ Yellow Switches

Mouse: Logitech Lightspeed G502

I'd like to stay around the $3000 mark, but there is some room to go up if needed. I've actually already ordered all these components to have them held, but I am absolutely able to switch it up if needed.

I'm coming from a prebuilt CyberPowerPC that I got a little under 6 years ago. This is my first time building my own PC, but I have built others in the past.

In case you're interested, here's what I'm coming from:

Spoiler

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K
Cooling: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo
Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition

Graphics Card: MSI GTX 960 4GB

RAM: 2x 8GB Sticks of Adata DDR3 XPG

Case: Raidmax Black Trinity
PSU: ATNG 600W 80 Plus

Storage: Samsung 860 Evo 1TB & Toshiba 1TB HDD

OS: Windows 10 Home

Thanks all!

  • I wouldn't get an MSI motherboard, especially an X570 one.
  • Make sure the RAM is CL16 or lower.
  • I wouldn't waste the money on a 980 Pro. It's unnecessary and you won't notice it.

Just out of curiosity, why would you not recommend the MSI board, especially that model? What would you recommend instead?

I like it! Thank you!

What guided your choice to swap the motherboard with a different model? Also, regarding RAM, is it better to have 2 sticks at 16GB/ea or 4 sticks at 8GB/ea? I know with more sticks the higher you risk the chance of hardware failure since you have more components, but I didn't know if there was a real world performance gain/loss.

Whats wrong with MSI? They make some great boards - (B550-A-PRO, B550 MPG GAMING PLUS)
Assuming you had a bad experience with them...

A bad experience would be an understatement.
Try at least 8 boards (over many years). Suggested them to a friend, who also had problems with theirs. I'd never put an enemy through their CS department.

Their B series boards aren't bad, some of their X570 boards are decent, but some are also trash. I wouldn't recommend them because of countless issues I've had with their products and customer support.

The X570 Gaming Edge is one of the worst performers in terms of VRM temps, so you should avoid it at all costs. The B550 version on the other hand is very good and that has a solid VRM. The B550 Tomahawk in the build above is also fine. If you are going X570 on MSI then the Tomahawk, Ace or Unify are the ones to buy.

CS3030 and SX8200 Pro can be taken instead. I wouldn't recommend the 980 Pro for the gaming.

The SX8200 Pro should be avoided seeing as Adata did a bait and switch. The PNY CS3030 looks ok but there are probably other options at that pricepoint.
