I am looking to build a new NAS for my property which includes 2 buildings that have computers in them.

Building 1 is my house, which  contains my work stations (CAD/CAM, some video editing and gaming)

Building 2 is my workshop which contains computers used for CAD/CAM and music streaming (gotta have tunes in the shop!)

My network rack is in building 1. I have a fiber cable that runs between the two buildings, and the computers in both buildings each have dedicated fiber optic links (currently 10GBe) back to the aggregation switch in the server rack in building 1. From a network topology and performance standpoint, all equipment might as well be in the same rack, but from a data redundancy standpoint, i have a means of 'off-site storage' that I would like to take advantage of.

Id like to build a NAS to be my primary file storage for the property.  I have 8x 4TB SAS drives from an old workstation that I would like to utilize for this. Probably in RAID 6. This will be located in Building 1 in the main equipment rack.

Im looking for a backup solution from the NAS to one of the machines in building 2 which will have a few large drives, but probably not a large RAID. This machine runs Windows 10 Pro.   The NAS should be fast (10GBe or possibly better down the road)  backup to the building 2 machine has 10GBe link, but I imagine write speeds will be my limiting factor. I am okay with this, backups should be scheduled for night time anyway and can run behind the scenes.

Id like to have an automatic backup scheduled to do an incremental backup on my music collection and raw video storage and a few other directories that are important, but not mission critical.

I also have a projects directory which contains design products that I would like to have backed up with some sort of version backup to allow me to retrieve old versions of files in the event that a file gets corrupted or I need to roll back a design unexpectedly.

I also would like an easy way to do a full backup of particular directories (family photos, design files, etc) to a removable drive in the NAS that I take to a safe deposit box a few towns over (I do this manually right now about once every 3-4 months).

Im less concerned about hardware at the moment, what I am looking for is software / OS solutions to help me accomplish the above.

What NAS solution should I use on the dedicated NAS machine, and what software/configuration should I use on the backup server that is shared with the CAD/CAM/Music machine in the workshop?

I dont mind paying for software if it will do what I want, and I don't want anything subscription or cloud based.

Thanks in advance for sharing your ideas and advice!

What do you like use? Truenas would work well here. Windows would work fine, ubuntu/centos works well.

Since your just syncing files, Id just get something lazy like robocopy with a task scheduler. Super easy to setup, cheap, and you can setup snapshots on the system that gets the files.
