Budget (including currency):  depends, shooting for under $200

Country: Costa Rica, all parts will be bought in the US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:  basic work computer/watch youtube/accounting/ book work. And also it is my security video recorder/ 3 cameras.

Other details I built this computer about 2 years ago with the plan to upgrade when I had more money. The current cpu is a intel pentium g5500. 16gb of ram. Motherboard b360n. No graphics card.

My biggest consumer of cpu power is the cameras. It uses over 50% cpu with the current setup. I have 3 cameras at the moment, but I want room for more.

My thoughts were a i5-9600 or a i7-8700t

The 8700t has hyperthreading. Would that be a benefit for the cameras?

I want to keep my power usage as low as possible. That's the reason I was thinking in the T model.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

I think you mean 8700, not 7800.

What are you talking about with cameras?

If it ramps up because it needs to, it's still going to use power.

Thanks, fixed the typos

OK what I am trying to say is the the current setup, the video surveillance software, is using over 50% CPU load. the reason it is so high, is because of the Pentium. I need something bigger.

Probably.  Without knowing what software it is or how it’s coded it’s hard to know what would help.  It’s not impossible for example the thing is a pure single thread app that will only ever run on one core, in which case core count and threading don’t matter and it’s all about Ghz and ipc.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

In the future I am looking into switching to Linux. I am currently searching for apps that work on Linux to make the switch.

They may or may not also have different behavior depending on how they are written.
