Boost Clock higher than expected

GPU boost 3.0 or 4.0, something all Nvidia Geforce cards have for a long time. As long as there are headroom for power, temperature and voltage it will always try push the GPU frequency higher. This makes their GPUs' rated boost clock kinda pointless since the boosting algorithm never follows it.

I'm running an EVGA 1650 Super, which is rated for a boost clock of 1755mhz, but I was recently playing a session of Mass Effect 2, and my GPU clocks were locked in at 1920mhz most of the time, and jumped up to 1935mhz every once in a while.

This is a little surprising as I don't have any overclocks running, unless a piece of software is OCing my hardware on its own.

 

I understand if thermals are under control and voltage is in check, the card has the ability to boost, but I would have thought I would have to enable a feature in software or something.

 

Can anyone explain this, and let me know where I would go to monitor and/or see this being applied?

That's awesome!

Shows how long I've been out of the gaming scene. My last card was a GTX 560 Ti.

 

Why does a manufacturer list a boost clock if Nvidia is just going to override it anyway?

Seems counterintuitive.

I just read an article on the technology and it was a fascinating read.

 

Between my GTX 560 ti, which wouldn't have had this technology as it apparently started with 600 series GPUs, and my current build with a placeholder 1650 super, I did have a lenovo legion y740 with a 1660ti, but I doubt the variables were ever right for GPU boost to kick in, given the limitations of laptop gaming, such as thermals and power.

 

This totally rocks, and I'm going to soak in the extra performance with glee!
