Hi!

I recently got a new “gaming” mouse which for some bizarre reason won’t work in my Windows 10 laptop. The mouse is okay, it works in other computers. The laptop’s USBs (one 2.0 and two 3.0) are also okay, other mice and pen drives work as expected. Whenever I plug in the mouse, a notification “your USB device malfunctioned” comes up. In device manager it shows “device descriptor failed” when plugged into the 2.0 port and “set address failed” when connected to the 3.0 port.

The mouse works if I connect it to the laptop via an unpowered USB hub.
More strangely the mouse lights up for a few seconds and then powers off as soon as the notification on the laptop comes up. I mean, even if Windows didn’t recognise the device, it should still be getting power right? That makes me think that the USB port can’t supply enough current. The mouse’s specs are 5v-100mA, same as my other mouse.

It's a specific incompatibility between the mouse and my laptop (ASUS TUF A15). Other users of the mouse with the same laptop also report the issue on Amazon reviews.

What could be wrong here? Do you think it's a hardware or software issue?
