BSOD On Imac?

My mate has an Imac and the screen's blacking out like after a minute, n apple won't resolve it as he doesn't have apple care? does anyone know what causes it? thanks

other then just the screen blacking out what else is it doing, how often are the kernal panics? what version of osx is it, what model imac?
