Hi, i'm in the process of building a NAS. This is my first time building a nas. Can I use a i5  10400f for it? I can also put a gtx 1050 or 960 in it to make it work. Does anyone know where to get good hard drives for repetitively cheap for California as well? Thanks in advance.

Yea you will need a gpu if you don't have a igpu. Id normally say get a chip with a igpu as its cheaper and lower power, and leaves the slot open.

FOr 6tb, id just get a single 8 or 10tb hdd. Or 2 for raid 1.

Are you running any other programs on the nas?

For that small of a nas id be tempted to just get a premade nas like a synology.

16 2666 adata ram, gtx 970 and gtx 1050, i510400f, ASRock Intel H410M-ITX/ac LGA 1200 Mini ITX, ASrock B460M-ITX/ac, and a evga 450 bronze psu

ID probalby sell those parts, and get cheaper ones as the nas won't need that much computing power.

But id go h410, gtx 1050, and 10400f if I had to pick.

Then get a bood ssd, and a 8/10tb hdd.

Probably like a pentium/celeron. You won't need much cpu power here, and those are cheaper and just as faster for this use.

What full set up would you go for if you were me? Or what would you do if you were me and need more storage over multiple devices?

But with your parts, id keep your board + psu.

FOr cheap drives, those externals can be shucked or removed from their case and used as a internal hdd.

Depending on your os, you either want a usb boot stick for like unraid, or a small ssd for boot for most other oses.

FOr a basic nas you really don't need much cpu power, its just moving data from a hdd to the network.
