I started running Prime95 for only about 30 seconds while I opened up my monitoring programs. I am using task manager to look at usage and hardware monitor by cpuid for the temperature monitoring. I only see one temperature and that is package. This temperature is all over the place and hit a max of 95C before I shut off Prime 95. This seems crazy high, is something wrong with software, or do I need to fix CPU cooler?

You should check your mount, take any reported temps with a grain of salt however because AMD"s temperature sensors for their CPU's are garbage and are wrong more often than not.

Cpuid is most likely giving you the wrong temperature for your cpu. I have a a10-5800k and the correct temperature for my cpu is actually under the motherboard section (it is the temperature that matches what my BIOS displays for the cpu temperature). The temperature reading of the cpu is much higher and I know that it isn't correct. I would look more into it before re-mounting your heatsink, I doubt that it is the problem.

I see under motherboard three temps 0,1, and 2

0: avg:34 min:34 max:40

1: avg:42 min:42 max:49

2: avg:24 min:24 max:24

I looked in the BIOS for a couple minutes and temperature was at 48-50C. Does that sound about right for idling? I am thinking that temp 1 is cpu.

Started up Prime 95 for 30 sec. Temp 1 climbs with cpu fan speed. Guess that is the actual temperature. Any idea what I should be getting with stock cooler under max load?

How high is your clock?

I've got mine at 4.4GHz and it runs load at about 70C.

EDIT: Please tell me you aren't using AMD's stock cooler.

You could also have a bad mount, and that could also be coupled with bad airflow in the case.  Lots of things could be going on.

AMD CPUs report wrong temps with software like HW Monitor. Many other users have non-accurate reported temps.

Best software to use is AMD Overdrive which shows your thermal headroom.

Also use the monitoring software from your motherboards manufacturer.

For Example

Gigabyte, use EasyTune

MSi use Command Center

etc.

Also stock cooler is really poor.

I ran Prime95 and the computer became unresponsive and the screen went black at 25 min.

I installed command center, but it won't open.

EDIT: Command Center finally opened.

I am using command center and it is reporting temps 10C below HWM. So far it is stable at 61C (according to Command Center) and 65% fan speed. I will post again after its run for a half hour or so.

EDIT: Hardware Monitor has the temperature for probe 0 the same as command center has for CPU. I guess I was looking at the wrong number. The fan curve never let fan go above 70%. I set it to max at 100% and everything is running fine so far.
