I picked a a computer from a kid today. While I was talking to his other the kid started a reset.

When I was ready to leave it he said he had reset it and it was done. So I get it home and find the battery dead and that he pulled the power before it finished installing.

Now the screens just flashes. Is there a way to fix this without having to install a new motherboard? That would be more than I paid for the machine and he already put my payment down on something else he was buying. Looks like I have a brick unless someone can help me out.

Thanks,

Murdock

Him not having your money is not your problem. That being said, you really should have inspected the machine yourself before paying and leaving... Next time let the seller finish erasing his stuff then while still at the seller download stress testing tools, like Prime95, FurMark, or Aida64 (has both GPU and CPU testing) and run a stress test for at least 15 minutes, if the machine fails or fails to reboot afterwards then just walk away. Check temperatures, also check S.M.A.R.T.  of the internal drives. This won't reveal some hidden flaws but at least you took the laptop for a small test drive.

I guess you mean windows reset, for hardware it doesn't matter if you the machine loses power during reset / install / update.
At worst Windows installation would be messed up and you would have to do either a repair or a fresh install. Just grab a flash drive and download Windows Media Installation tool on a working PC, use the tool to make a bootable flash drive and plug it the misbehaving laptop, the either do a clean install or do setup repair.
If you can't access BIOS or there is no POST then the laptop has a more serious HW related problem... and chances of that happening just because a power loss during a reset are really slim.

Thanks, I have played with it more now. It does look like it is only the Windows issue. I can get to the BIOS. I also used a LINUX USB stick and was able to boot up to it an run from the stick. I have just downloaded the Windows media installation tool and do not seem to get it to fix the issue right now. Looks like a fresh install of Windows. So I think all will be good.

I am waiting however to receive today a new battery before I start messing with anything. Once I install that and get things powered with a backup I think I will be good. One of the restores I tried says I need at least 20% battery charge. Right now I have zero percent. I will try that before doing a fresh install.

Thanks for your willingness.
