When building a computer with the Asus A88X-PLUS is it necessary to plug in the 4-pin CPU cord into the motherboard next to the CPU. Because  I have build the computer itself, and seems as though everything is working. However when we try to install windows 8 nothing appears on the screen.

Yes, you need to plug in the power to the CPU.

Yes because IIRC that is to relieve strain on the big 24pin power connector and it is the CPU power delivery connector so yes, for the love of whatever you believe in, connect it.
