I've planned to make my first gaming build with these components: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3ibEn . I decided to see how cheap I can go without the GPU for <$450 USD, as a friend of mine will give me his 6870 while he upgrades.

Do note I have absolutely no clue on choosing reliable components and whether or not they're compatible without pcpartpicker saying they're not. I can't ask my friend if he knows any more than I do since he got his rig off of CyberPower. I've been watching Linus's Fast As Possible videos, but I still feel as if I'm missing stuff that I should know before buying these parts. For example: what brand of motherboards, PSUs, and GPUs produce quality components with low RMA rates, what motherboard chipset is compatible without needing a BIOS update, and many other questions.

All tips are welcome!

generally, youd want a 970 ro up chipset for a newer FX processor, or it may throttle even at stock speeds

got any old hard drives laying around you can salvage for the build? it can be from old laptops a ps3 etc..

personally at your price point I'd look at getting some of the components on the used market. I would get used RAM and a used CPU and hard drive if possible. Then you'll have maybe a 100$ left over that you'll be able to save up later on to buy a much better GPU for 180$ or so.

Oops, forgot to mention that! I have a 500gb HDD on my computer right now. I don't plan on buying a new one with the money I have saved up just yet as I've only used 200gb so far with L4D2, Garry's Mod, and CS:GO.

As for other missed information, I do plan on gaming and OCing. I hope to get at least 4.0GHz to match the 8350 without spending the extra cash.

4 ghz is easy. You should be shooting for 4.2-4.5 ghz with the 212 Evo depending on your chip.
