Should I get an AIO liquid cooler?

Januka Chandrasena

i have a feeling that this question has been asked many times before, but should I get a watercooler for my CPU.

I mainly edit videos on my machine with davinci resolve 17 and my CPU does get toasty once I start adding clips to the timeline. All I have for now is a stock intel for the ol LGA 1151 sockets.

If I should get a watercooler, dual fan or single fan??

What is your CPU?

If it's the one from your profile (i5 6500), then go ahead and buy something like a Hyper 212 Evo or Arctic eSports 34. A relatively cheap single tower will do fine for this CPU.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

What CPU is it specifically? In almost all cases, the answer to "do I need an AIO?" is no. You almost certainly need something better than the stock cooler, though.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X · Cooler: Artic Liquid Freezer II 280 · Motherboard: MSI MEG X570 Unify · RAM: G.skill Ripjaws V 2x16GB 3600MHz CL16 (2Rx8) · Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce RTX 3060 Ti TUF Gaming · Boot Drive: 500GB WD Black SN750 M.2 NVMe SSD · Game Drive: 2TB Crucial MX500 SATA SSD · PSU: Corsair White RM850x 850W 80+ Gold · Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow · Monitor: MSI Optix MAG342CQR 34” UWQHD 3440x1440 144Hz · Keyboard: Corsair K100 RGB Optical-Mechanical Gaming Keyboard (OPX Switch) · Mouse: Corsair Ironclaw RGB Wireless Gaming Mouse

If you're not sure to have an AIO, then i would say NO.

A good air cooler is all you need.

Hyper 212 & Deepcool Gammax is a good starting point.

You've gotta give us specifics man. You didn't tell us your CPU, temps, case size, or anything that would allow us to reach a proper conclusion. If you're not thermal throttling with the stock cooler I would suggest you don't technically need to upgrade at all, but again, this is a total crap shoot.

This is very true. If you are not sure if you want to go liquid cooling, you likely won't need to. There are also quite a number of high end air coolers that can give similar cooling results as AIOs. I have personally switched from AIOs back to air cooling and didn't notice too much of a difference in performance. Unless you have some of the hotter CPUs, the Gammaxx V2 models and 212s make excellent options for most people.

That should be easy to cool. What are current load temps?

Yeah. Just get a single tower cooler. That's plenty.
