what is "variable loudness"

Go to solution Solved by ShearMe,

Pretty sure it's just an EQ. I looked up the User's Manual and even created an account on some fancy site to download it for you, but I'll just post a screen shot:

just saw this interesting dial on my amp called variable loudness. when i change it, it sounds like it suppressing everything thats not bass or treble but unlike an eq it doesn't change the tone of the music. just curious what is it actually doing. and why don't modern amps have this, i quite like the feature.

hmm, it sounds to me like a compressor. It sets a threshold so that it can balance all the levels equally so you're not deafened by a sudden loud explosion or massive battle in a film

You ever had that problem when you watch a film and the voice acting sounds quiet and then the sound effects and music are deafening? a compressor (or in this case the variable loudness), cuts of a loud peak to match the levels of the quietest points  ;)

At least this is the impression I get from your statement. Does this sound about right?

Corsair 400R, i7 3770K @ 4.5GHz 16GB, Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz, Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Motherboard, 240GB Samsung 840 Evo Sata III SSD, 2 x Asus GTX 780 Direct CU2 SLI, Corsair H100i and Corsair AX860i Platinum Power supply.
