So I had to reset both my ISP issued router and my main router as I couldn’t remember my passwords.

I have a quick noob question. I believed that I previously had a DMZ set on my ISP’s router/modem to my main router’s IP address as I want my main router to control all my wireless and security settings. I also turned off the wireless radios on my ISP’s device.

Is this a smart way of going about things or would I be better served using a different method.

You should set your ISP's router to bridge mode.

Unfortunately my ISP’s router doesn’t offer that feature.

Why do you even have to use the ISP's router? Telephone (voip) service?

I’m just using it to supply a connection to my main router.

Ah, my ISP uses a ONT for that. They also have one router (their top router) which has built in ONT. But all routers support Bridge Mode, your ISP seems pretty bad not allowing it.

Yeah they are lol. Would my needs be safely served by going the DMZ route?

I'm not sure. I would also disable HCP and firewall in the ISP's router.

If you don't live with many people using the internet and you game through ethernet cable, as you should do, I would just stick to the ISP's router.
