Budget (including currency): $700 Canadian Dollars

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:  Primarily this is a development machine I also do some light video/photo editing. I'm not gamer, and I would tailor any games I picked up to the system rather than system to the games.

Other details:  I built my own existing computer somewhere circa 2008-2009. I rebuilt and upgraded the case around 2014, but other than that.... So, very old parts. It has a ASUS P5N-D motherboard with a Intel Core Duo processor and 16 gigs of DDR2 ram, Ultra LSP 550W power supply, and a GeForce GTX 460 GPU. Day to day I haven't really used this computer in 5 or 6 years, my work usually supplies me with a desktop to work on and that is what I have been working on (currently a 7th gen I7 HP Pavilion) . But I'm sure I'm not alone working from home now and just looking to have a little more control, consistency and performance in my development experience.

Now I'm not a gamer... I say this is again because I can already feel the cringing. And also looks aren't really important at this point,

I'd like to reuse my case, GPU and if possible my PSU and leave the later two as an upgrade path going forward.

My Build

New Parts:

Existing Parts:

  • Case - it's a Corsairs midtower case, nothing fancy but it has good airflow
  • Ultra LSP 550W PSU
  • GeForce GTX 460 GPU

total: 697.98

So what do you think reasonable choices?

Any reason to go for a x570 instead of a B550? Since you seem to keep your setup for a long time, maybe the fact that the x570 has a non-replaceable fan could be a problem, along with the fact that most B550s have better VRMs than their x570 counterparts.

Thanks for the suggestion, I didn't consider the longevity impact. I was debating between the two, my main thought was storage performance is important for a lot of my daily work and I would likely want to upgrade to a second M.2 sooner than later and I thought getting the full Gen4 experience on both drives would be worth the extra cost. But probably not at the sake of longevity.

I'll throw my 2 cents in case it helps: I'm also a python dev (but mostly working with data), and my 2x PCIe 3.0 nvmes are more than enough for everything I do.

Going to take your advice on this and swap out the motherboard to the:

Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 ATX AM4 Motherboard

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!

You're welcome!

I know you're already planning it, but I'd strongly recommend to upgrade the PSU whenever you can. Don't want your new parts dying due to a failure caused by an old PSU.
