PSU with SMBus

schulsi

Hello,

I want to build a PC/Workstation with an old server mainboard with dual CPU. So I bought all hardware 2 Xeon CPUs, ECC DDR3 RAM and a Intel s5520hc Mainboard and installed it. But with both CPUs installed the system doesnt boot up.

After a bit of googling I found out that the mainboard has an SMBus Connector that has to be connected. Otherwise the mainboard will only boot with one CPU installed.

So now my question: Can you suggest any PSU with dual CPU connector and a SMBus Connector.

I didnt find anything and have no clue what to do. Or do you have any idea how to "hack" the SMBus?

Thanks for the help.

The Corsair AX series seems have that connector. The new AX1600 went to miniUSB connector as I see on pictures, the old ones have very similar to the motherboard's.

AX doesn't, AX-i does. As do RM-i and HX-i. But i'm not knowledgeable enough to say if Corsair's iCUE is actually SMBus or not.

Maybe @jonnyGURUknows or can ask someone from software engineering team.

Seems Corsair is moving from the Digital iLink (I2C SMBUS/PMBUS for IPMI monitoring cards) to USB-based connection (for iCue software):

Matrix:

HX750i, HX850i, HX1200i have both 4-pin PMBUS (PSU SMbus) cable called Link cable (Corsair Link Digital Interface Cable) and also miniUSB to USB 9-pin header cable
HX1000i, HX1500i have only USB type-C to USB 9-pin header cable
RM1000i, RM850i, RM750i, RM650i have both 4-pin PMBUS (PSU SMbus) cable called Link cable (Corsair Link Digital Interface Cable) and also miniUSB to USB 9-pin header cable
AX860i has only 4-pin PMBUS cable called Link cable
AX1200i has only 4-pin PMBUS cable called Link cable
AX1600i has only miniUSB to USB 9-pin header cable

AX1200i has I2C PMBUS digital comm connector, which can be hooked to an IPMI card through 80cm PMBUS Cable (4PIN) aka Corsair Link™ Digital interface cable, possibly sold separately as https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/pc-...-8920117/axi-i2c-800mm-pmbus-cable-cp-8920117. Via PMBUS one can not only read voltage ad current but also turn on/off the powersupply.
AX1200i also contains bundled I2C to USB convertor called Corsair Link™ USB Dongle, possibly sold separately as https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/pc-components-accessories/cp-8920019/ax-1200i-860i-760i-usb-to-i2c-adapter-cp-8920019

For unclear reason the AX860i and AX1600i models have the USB connector which requires you to connect it to an internal USB 9-pin header (80cm USB cable (9PIN)), no I2C PMBUS. Than iCUE software can read it if Win are running at all.

Likewise HX1000i and HX1500i have the USB connect and again, you must connect them to the internal USB 9-pinheader:

The RMi series has both PMBUS and USB monitoring outputs.

How do I know this? Because I am looking for a powersuppluy which can be hooked to the ASUS IMPI card with 5-pin connector:

@Martin3, I'm inquisitive about where you landed on your analysis. I believe I'm in the same situation (building an ASUS MB, specifically the Pro WS W680-ACE, using the same IPMI Card, and looking for an appropriate ATX PSU with PMBUS compatibility.) Did you select between those Corsair PSUs and successfully build using the Asus IPMI Card?
