So I'm planning a low/mid level build, and I was planning on getting a 7850 and an i3 3220.

But then a friend suggested some places where I could save money and told me to save for a 7950 (Apparently there is a massive performance increase).

So my question is. Would I experience/see the effects of bottlenecking?

Thanks :)

Your friend is a smart man.

As for bottlenecking the i3 would definitely bottleneck a 7950.

Might I suggest something like a FX 8150/8350 or an i5-3570k?

I would recommend a quad core now a days for gaming despite the fact that people still say games aren't taking advantage of the extra cores.

Hi McMitch! I would say the CPU would bottleneck the GPU, but if you can afford a 7950 then get it as more and more games are using more GPU than CPU therefore meaning you dont need as good a CPU.

Bottom line, get the 7950, i3 will do but a 3570k or even 3450 would be a little better.

Hope I helped!

I was going to save up for a 3570k, but my PC at the moment is awful, I just want a decent one.

I might save for one after, it will only be a month or so.

I would agree, but your going to already be spending £100 on a cpu, why not save the extra 50 now instead of paying 250? maybe making 70 if you sell the i3 on ebay or summin? i guess if you then decided you wanted to build a media pc and have your i5 as gaming and keep the i3, get a cheep mobo, hdd, case & psu e.t.c then your good, but otherwise dont spend more than you need to!

techteam is right, buying two cpu's is gonna cost you more in the long run, i did that and now have a second computer that one one uses when i could have waited and spent all that money on my current rig and have something even better

I wouldn't exactly cheap out the PSU as that is like the backbone of the computer.

Neither would i, i simply meant there would be nearly no point in buying an i3 simply to upgrade fairly shortly, unless you had a plan to have a media center pc or something..

If you can get an i5, go for it. The i3 would bottleneck the 7950 but it wouldn't be the difference between playable and slideshow. As long as the i3 has a good gpu to back it up, you'll be fine.
