Odd problem loading Windows 10, any ideas?

hi

i have a new 11th gen I7 HP laptop, 500 Gb Nvme SSD, 32 Gb Ram..........

I want to do a clean install of Win 10 pro on it, i do have a couple licenses ...

so....using a usb created from Microsoft web site we all have done 50+ time..

When install i had to load storage drivers ti the thumb drive see the ssd i want to install windows on,

ok , so i got over that, selected the drive to install to and click next,

but there was no choice of OS to install, it just started installing windows

and when it was done Windows Home was loaded,

i tried to upgrade to pro and it came back with an error.

i should have wrote that down

so....

has anyone ever got a windows 10 pro install disk or thumb drive?

just 10 pro by its self,

and where did you purchase it?

i don't believe i can make this pro any other way,

ideas, thoughts on how to get it to 10 Pro, ????

thanks

Thomas

you don't purchase it, you go to windows.com (or well, whatever Microsoft's domain is), go to media creation tool, and choose Windows 10 64 bits.

Then, when installing it, if you don't have the option between Pro, Home, (and i forgot the last one) then there's some sort of problem

The only time I've seen a windows installer not ask what version you wanted to install is if the computer is connected to the internet and has a windows product key imbedded in the BIOS as the installer can read that license and authenticate it with microsoft to verify what version of windows 10 it needs to install.

You might have to pay to upgrade to pro unless you can get help from HP to get the imbedded license key removed.

well i have never connected a clean install to the internet while doing it,

this laptop has the lightest BOIS i have ever come across, almost nothing

can be adjusted,

i like your getting in touch with HP thought,

you never know, i will put that on the list

thanks

Almost all laptops/prebuilts have the windows key stored in the BIOS at the factory, the installer sees it and installs the matching version.

If you want to upgrade you do so in the settings afterwards (settings->update and security->activation->change product key). Once you enter a Pro key there it'll install the missing stuff, reboot and you've got Pro.

Demonix00

and everyone else thank you,  thank you so much

you got me on the right track

i searched windows key embedded in the bios,

i found a way to get windows to install so i can now choose windows pro

short version is ...copy the following to a text file....

[EditionID]
Professional
[Channel]
Retail
[VL]

then save that file as "ei.cfg"  ( YES MAKE SURE YOU USE THE QUOTES )

to the sources folder on the USB install drive

and when you start installing windows again

the option to choose Windows 10 Pro is now showing up  🙂  🙂

just finished the install, it shows Windows 10 Pro in the system

and now it is doing updates, feeling good now

If something goes wrong i will post an update, crossing fingers now🙂

thank you so much for the guidance getting me back on track
