Hey Linus tech tips community,

I've been thinking about overclocking my CPU & GPU, which are an Intel i5-4670K & an Asus NVIDIA GTX 760 Direct CU II OC, respectively.

I'm looking for some tips as to what should I set the clock on both CPU and GPU and the memory on the GPU, without obviously overheating.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance ;)

Oh. Oops, forgot to mention that

I use a custom thermaltake 120mm heatsink with a 120mm fan pushing air through it

So you don't know the name? Well seems like an OK size for cooler anyway.

What motherboard do you have?  If you have an Asus, the auto-tuning overclocks have been good to me.  Most people say to not do the auto overclock, but I achieved a 4.7Ghz OC on my i5-4670k, Asus Z87-A, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO at only 1.275v, and I have never exceeded 60C during game play.  Every chip is different, so you may not get the same results, but give it a try, see what it automatically overclocks your system to, and if you like it, leave it at that!

I currently have an ASUS Z87-Plus. I was looking for an OC around the 4.3-4.5 GHz range but I don't really want to exceed 1.3v on the voltage.

Try the automated overclock.  Your motherboard is very similar to mine, so it should yield similar results.  Another nice thing about the automated overclock is that it caps the voltage at 1.275 which is a very conservative voltage.  Try it out and let us know your results!

Well I just tried OC'ing to 4.3 GHz @ 1.239v and ran a stress test and it maxed out core #3 @ 84ºC , so that's a no go for me.

EDIT: Will test the auto OC ASUS mode. Seems pretty straight-forward.

Do the extreme auto-tuning.

Also, stress tests are exactly that, a stress.  Your temperatures during a stress test are going to FAR exceed any real-world temperatures you will get.

Yep. I ran BF4, a pretty intensive game, with everything maxed out as a comparison to a stress test and the CPU temp stopped rising @ 67ºC and the game running @ 60+FPS. Always (I also OC'd my GTX 760). The stress test was to detect if my OC was unstable, which is actually not :D

Try the extreme auto tuning and see what kind of overclock it gives your CPU, then let us know please.  I am curious if the results I got can be replicated -- by all accounts, a 4.7Ghz OC on 1.275v is very good.

On it ! ;)

Yeah I'll try to replicate your results and check for temperatures on my PC . What' you know your CPU idle and CPU under load temperatures so that I can compare? ;)

EDIT: Results: Auto tuning from ASUS gives me 4.0 - 4.1 GHz OC @ just under 1.1v (1.080-1.090v) which is .. just amazing! Unfortunately my processor gets unstable after 4,5 Ghz to the point that it just won't boot windows, so I can't replicate your results :(

@imS0ul

Here are my system specs:

  • CPU: Intel i5-4670k @ 4.7Ghz -- 1.275v
  • Motherboard: Asus Z87-A
  • RAM: Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB @ 1600Mhz
  • GPU: EVGA GTX 780 SC 3GB w/ ACX Cooler
  • Case: Ultra Defender II - Open Side Panel
  • Storage: Kingston 120GB SSD + External Western Digital 2TB
  • PSU: Corsair CX 600M
  • Display(s): Asus VS239H-P 23in Full HD LED IPS + LG 42in 720p TV
  • Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO + 5x Cougar Vortex PWM 1600rpm

On idle my computer is around 28-30C

In  demanding games, I have never seen it exceed 60C, and it stays mostly in the 50s. Games I play are: Crysis3, Titanfall, Metro: Last Light/2033, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.  Other games like Civilization V, and League of Legends it doesn't even reach 50C.

When I ran Prime95 in blend, it would go as high as 82C.

I don't overclock my GPU.

Did you do a fast tuning or an extreme tuning?  4.1 seems more like a "fast tuning" score.  Try the extreme tune.  It will first restart your computer, dont be alarmed.  Then it will start running stress tests at higher clock speeds until it blue screens.  Just let it run, and it will eventually find your limit.

These guys seem to have you covered on the CPU. im 4.5 Ghz 1.26V. as far as your 760 goes i found the best testing method to be actual gameplay. find a single player game, and keep turning it up until your start crashing then bac off a bit. I found AC4 to take the most out of my gpu so i used that and i got 1241 Mhz which i have come to find is very high compared to most people but find your own.
