Hello everyone,

Longtime LTT lurker, 1st-time poster. I'm looking for help in building a computer for my small business. < redacted by moderation > I'm hoping to get a desktop prebuilt computer in April.

1. Budget & Location

Between $4,500 - $6,000 (Pricing based on a previous LTT post: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1305580-new-pc/?tab=comments#comment-14482055)

2. Aim

I run a company that does architectural renderings and animations. I'm mostly doing business stuff, work in 3ds Max + Corona, and finish up renderings in Photoshop. However, I need the ability to render out animations (see "why upgrading?" below)

3. Monitors

Either connect my existing laptop and the new desktop to my current monitor or one monitor for each. Monitors would need VESA mounts.

4. Peripherals

I don't plan on changing peripherals. The build requires Microsoft Windows 10.

5. Why are you upgrading?

While my laptop can handle most of the business & Photoshop stuff, I need a desktop to pump out high resolution 3D renderings and animations. Initially I want a Threadripper that can get upgraded without issue. I'm looking into prebuilds because they are available & I don't have time to research / plan out my perfect system.  I also want a quiet desktop when I'm not rendering. Would software underclocking/overclocking work?

My suggestions on the build:

  • Case - probably black, no RGB. Function over form is fine.
  • Processor - Assuming all chips listed are upgradable, here are the AMD Ryzen Threadrippers I am looking into:
    - Pro 3975WX 32 Core CPU (3.5GHz-4.2GHz, 144MB Cache)
    - 16-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3955WX (Plan to upgrade later when chip shortages are stable)
    - 12-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3945WX (Plan to upgrade later when chip shortages are stable)
  • Processor Cooling - open to ideas
  • Motherboard - Needs to be upgradable to AMD's latest specs. They should transfer over to the new Threadripper version.
  • Memory - 3D renderings are hogs for RAM. Suggested minimum 64GB. Prefer 128GB or 256GB. May consider higher MHz Ram if pricing isn't outrageous.
  • Graphics Card - RTX 2070/2080/3070/3080 depending on what's in stock. Only requirement is RTX as we need raytracing for our animations. We're also getting into some work within Unreal Engine.
  • 1st M.2 SSD Drive - Minimum 1TB, suggested 2TB. I like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Rocket-Internal-Performance-SB-ROCKET-2TB/dp/B07MTQTNVR
  • 1st Storage Drive - 2TB+ SSD or 6+ 7200 RPM HD.
  • Power Supply - open to ideas
  • Sound Card - open to ideas
  • Network Card 10/100/1000 Gigabit LAN Port. Wi-Fi suggested but optional.
  • USB/Thunderbolt Options Min. 2 x USB 3.0 Back Panel + Min. 2 Front Ports. HDMI port, USB-C port are also required.
  • Operating System Windows 10 64 Bit

Thanks for question @MarvintheParrot. You would pick a prebuilt for me. Along with the community's help (I hope), I would purchase that build from the website & specifications you mentioned.

what a tragedy

but being serious, id be more than happy to find you a prebuilt or make a PCP list (if you can find parts lol)

Not going to do any stuff with shipping or GCS tho, id rather do it for free

A Thinkstation or something like it will fit your needs at the price point you are trying to meet.  You aren't playing games and your rendering is CPU based right?

Little / no gaming. Corona is a CPU-based renderer which I will primarily use. Eventually I will use the GPU for UE4 but I can wait until the graphics cards get lowered.

Thanks for the spec from Amazon, but I would like to get a list of options I can adjust if needed.

Keep in mind that this is a forum and we offer free advice. The majority of the forum users here would recommend building your own system over a prebuilt (that's just how it is). Your post and mainly throwing in a GC for the "best" system borderlines CS guidelines, without getting approval by someone on the moderation team.

I'll see what I can do to help you though as I'm not that type of person. 🙂

This is slightly above your budget, around $6,500. Placed the lower end Threadripper since you are upgrading it later down the road, doesn't really make sense to pay more for it right now. 128GB DDR4-2933MHz that is also ECC registered, and you have room to grow as it is only using the 4 DIMM slots (total of 8 on the motherboard, but keep in mind that the memory controllers may have issues with trying to fill up the memory channels and applying any overclock such as XMP/DOCP). 1000W PSU for some overhead in the future, as well as the 5x2TB HDDs and a AE-7 sound card. Chose the H150i AIO as Threadrippers can output a lot of heat, so an adequate cooling system is necessary.

Thanks @SpiderMan and @MarvintheParrotfor your updated lists. Do you recommend Origin PC over the other vendors? Is their warranty / customer service good?

@TheGlenlivet & @TheCoder2019 - Thanks for listing, but I'm concerned with using Amazon. The builds are limited and I'm not sure how customer service would be if something happened. Any other companies you can recommend?

Either @SpiderManor my lists will work. I would recommend origin, as they are experienced builders. Plus, because you are buying from them they throw in some customer service as well. Don't expect for every single problem to be fixed though... 😕

I would 100% recommend @SpiderMans build over mine, the main differences being the WAY more storage and the better cooling potential.

Here is a combination of both of our systems. It IS over the budget, at $6,006 USD, but you can keep the $30 and use it for that.558128945_Screenshot2021-03-31175303.thumb.png.f822849b5e07e7171366e45e09ec4003.png

Origin PC is a reliable PC builder. They have a long track record and I hardly ever hear any complaints about Origin PC. They are great with their customer service compared to Dell and I recommend them over other vendors out there.

@brianzajac, I've removed the mentions about "prize" from your post and hope you don't add it again or mention such. Like said, this is community forum and any advice given is meant to be free. If you want professional and paid help for your needs, you can find several companies specializing on that.

Buying/selling any services is not allowed. And this falls more into that category since you have something to gain from it. Its not giveaway or challenge where the results are meaningless.

I will edit/remove some discussion about the gift card so it won't confuse people coming in late here.
