Hello I didn't know how to phrase it in my title so sorry for being so vague. 

 

Okay so I have a balcony that is 300cm wide and 280cm deep. I want to buy outdoor wood tiles to cover the whole -or most of it- concrete floor. 

 

Each package of tiles comes with 9 tiles each measuring 30x30cm.

 

I am absolutely shit at maths but I tried my best and I am in need of your help to tell me how wrong I am. 

 

Basically I calculated the total area. Which is 300x280 which is 84,000 or 8.4 metres. 

 

I then calculated the total area of each tile package. 9x30 is 27 so the area each package will cover is 2.7 metres. 

 

I then took the total area 8.4 divided by 2.7, the area each set covers. Which is 3.1.

 

So in my calculations I would need to purchase 3.1 sets of tiles to cover the entire balcony. I'm rounding this down to 3 packages since I'm not going all the way to the edges and that will take into account of the missing 10cm missing on each edge. 

 

How correct is this?

Length * Width    = Area

L(deck) * Wdeck)  = A(deck)

L(tile) * W(tile) = A(tile)

A(deck) / A(tile)  = tiles per deck

tiles per per deck / tile count per package = packages per deck

L(deck)   = 300

W(deck)   = 280

300 * 280 = 84000

L(tile)   = 30

W(tile)   = 30

30 * 30   = 900

84000 / 900 = 93.334

93.334 / 9 = 10.37

 

You forgot to multiply by 30 twice to get the area of tiles per package, then you did something weird with the units. Start with 10 packages

Yeah I'm still confused. I apologize I'm just completely shit at math. I'm trying to learn. 

 

Each package of tiles measures 90x90 if you put them all in a square. 

 

90x90 is 8100

 

84000 / 8100 is 10.37 which is the same conclusion as your answer. Am I correct when calculating this way? Or am I making it to complicated for myself? 

 

And yeah it seems like 3 packages is way to few. Unfortunately I knew it was to good to be true lol because one package was like $15 so I was pleasantly surprised when I thought I could cover my entire balcony for like 50 bucks lol. 

 

But that's why I decided to write here because if something is to good to be true, it probably is. And I just saved myself a ton of work. Thank you!

Also, you should calculate an extra 10% more than you actually need for damage loss/defective pieces. I just refloored my entire first floor of my house. Also I used to work for a custom flooring company.

The way I calculated it is as thus:

 

Balcony: 300cm (W) x 280cm (D)

Tiles: 30cm x 30cm (comes in packages of 9)

 

So, let's break it down. To take one set of tiles and completely cover one direction:

The Balcony is 300cm wide. You have 30cm wide tiles. You need 10 tiles to take a single "row" of tiles from one side of the Width to the other.

Math: 300cm / 30cm = 10 tiles

 

Now, take a set of tiles and completely cover the other direction:

The balcony is 280cm deep. You have 30cm deep tiles. You need 9.3... tiles to make a single "column" from front to back (you'll need 10 tiles, but the last tile will need to be trimmed to fit).

Math: 280cm / 30 = 9.3... tiles (this is rounded to 10 tiles because you can't buy 33% of one tile)

(the ... signifies a repeating number, 3 repeating forever in this case - not really important, just don't want to cause confusion).

 

So now, to make one column and one row of tiles, you need 20 of them.

 

Okay let's extrapolate out the entire system now. You need 10 tiles in one direction and 10 tiles in the other direction.

Math: 10 x 10 = 100 tiles

 

So, you need approximately 100 tiles to cover the entire balcony (minus the bits you'd trim off, which would reduce the actual number to less than 100, but not really because you need to trim 10 tiles - you could reuse the trim to make "whole" tile pieces by combining them, but it'll look bad so your choice here).

 

Now, there are 9 tiles per package. This means you need 12 packages of tiles (which leaves you with 8 leftover spare tiles - great in case there are defects or you make a mistake).

Math: 100 tiles / 9 per package = 11.1... packages (rounded to 12 packages because you cannot buy 10% of a package).

The problem with doing it by area instead of this method is that it doesn't really take into effect partial tiles (wasted material that isn't very useful). If your Balcony was a size that was divisible by the tiles into an integer (a whole number), you could easily use the area method. But that's not the case here.
