3070 or 3080

The latest nVidia RTX 3000 series or AMD RX 6000 series cards that are out now are a bit overkill for 1080p

RTX 2080 or even 2070 might do the job at 1080p. And AMD equivalent previous generation cards should do perfectly at 1080p.

1440p on the other hand really do need at least 3070. (sorry, didn't read the title fully at first)

3070 for 1080 and 3080 for 1440. Don't know what games you are aiming for as ultra preset  in one game will be medium preset in another.

Whichever one you can get.

If you have a choice between the two - where you can buy either - I'd get a 3080.
It'll do both fine.

The 3070 is what you're looking for. The 3080 is more of a 4k card. Unless you're playing like cyberpunk or Microsoft flight sim the 3070 will do 1440 144hz on medium to high setting in any game.
