Upgrade ps3 without controller

So my ps3 hard drive is old and getting slow. So I wanted to upgrade the HDD but I do not have a dualshock or sixaxis controller to be able to able to install the updat file onto. (makes you push START and SELECT). is there anyway way to be able to do this with out a ps3 controller.

 

Im using a Dualshock4 and have one of the move controllers with the X and O buttons to be able to navigate menus and stuff.

 

Could i just get a USB to sata adapter and use the backup utility to clone the drive?

Will using a game disk or CD with the updat file on it automatically play?

will a knock off ps3 controller work?

or any other ideas?

Yes you can clone the drive with plugging it straight to the SATA port.

You can also try using usb mouse / keyboard to navigate.

Knock off ps3 gamepad will also work.

The problems with your controller usually can be fixed with cleaning the button contacts with IPA / contact cleaner.

I bought a couple of these, used ebay buyer protection to get them half off. $9 for a knockoff controller isn't too bad, but I still need to find an official controller for the games that a DS4 doesn't work on.
