Would trying to attach fans to a GPU Backplate be beneficial at all?

My thought was thinking of putting a fan(s) on the backplate of my GPU to pull heat to the top of the case where the other exhaust fans are.

Is this just a dumb idea or could it actually be beneficial? 🤔

If your GPU is having issues due to stuff on the backside of the PCB overheating then yeah. If no, then nope.

I think it's better if you show us your entire PC and we can see if there's something else to change. Since under normal circumstances you shouldn't need to attach fans to the back of your GPU.

Depends. Cards like 3090 with VRAM at the back? Definitely. Surprised no cards come with it, there are so many models with awful backside temperatures. If the card doesnt really cool the VRM or VRAM on its own, cooling the back is a way out.

  • 5 months later...

Attaching fans to the backplate will not benefit the GPU as far as temperature is concerned. In my experimentation, the GPU die temp was identical both with and without fans. However, it is highly beneficial to any components near the backplate which may be suffering from thermal performance caps. I own the ASUS TUF Gaming X570 Plus (Wi-Fi) and the NVME drive above the GPU is literally millimeters from the backplate. Even with a heatsink on the NVME drive, the temperatures were always around 65°C according to Samsung Magician. Since the second NVME lower on the board with an identical SSD was at 42°C, this bothered me. I ended up floating two 80mm fans on top of the backplate pulling air away. It looks a bit cluttered, but now the NVME temps are 42°C just like the other one. I thought I had adequate airflow through the case itself, but it seemed there was still dead air over the backplate heating up the SSD. Those two fans solved the issue. The only downside is they crowd up the case and look a little out of place. I'm always open for suggestions to improve this mod. I even looked into getting a 3rd party water-cooled backplate, which they do make.
