Budget (including currency): 1,500 (maybe a little over)

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly for Davinci Resolve and possible light gaming

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Hey this is will be my first time building a pc. I will primarily use it for college, davinci resolve (I am a film major) and I want to get into a little bit of gaming. I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know what is wrong with my current picks and maybe some better substitutions. Also I've yet to choose a case so any recommendations would be great! Thanks!

You would need a GPU. That CPU has no integrated graphics. You'll either have to go for an AMD CPU that ends in G (3200g etc) or an Intel CPU that doesn't end in an F (9900k, 9700k and not 9900KF or 9700KF)

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

I not exactly an expert, but what I can say is that the CPU is great, but good luck finding one of those right now. They are pretty much out of stock everywhere and probably will be for a while. If you get lucky and watch a product drop livestream you might get one? Hard and time consuming though.

I like the SSD, but especially since you are (presumably) going to have lots of video on it I would highly recommend a storage device with a little more grunt to it. 1TB will last a little while, but it isn't going to sustain you for too too long. I'm not qualified to say a harddrive is good for editing, but personally I would get at least a 4-5TB HDD.

PSU might be enough, but if you really are using that CPU you might want some more.

Edit: especially so if you get that graphics card ^^^

If I am not mistaken, Resolve is more taxing on GPU than CPU. I would personally go for a 3900X, and use the extra cash on a better GPU.

I assume you are going AIO for looks, a 240mm AIO will be just as good as a 360mm AIO for long taxing tasks. For air cooling Noctua NH-D15 is another option.

@OP you do need a GPU.

@OP I would agree with Daviden, get a lower capacity SSD and a higher capacity HDD. For powersupply get gold rated efficiency, 650w Bronze is being pushed pretty hard with a $1500 PC.

Ya, I personally use my SSD for just my OS and some select other programs I use frequently, it's only a 256 GB drive.

What CPU and GPU would you recommend?

Any Intel CPU that doesn't have an F and any AMD CPU that ends in G will have integrated graphics, although you would need to check and make sure that it does have it.

So yes, you'd need a GPU if you either got the Ryzen 9 3900X or if you got the Ryzen 5 5900X.

Also I noticed no one suggesting a case to you, so you can go with a Fractal Design Meshify C, or a Corsair 4000D Airflow. Both have really good airflow. Make sure the case has mesh front panels, so you can easily get airflow.

(I'm looking at you, NZXT H510. Your airflow sucks.)
