High-end build, advice needed

Nashiwa

Hi everyone,

I'm posting this for a friend who is planning on building himself a gaming rig. His budget is around 30'000 NOK (we live in Norway). The plan is to have a high-end rig for gaming/VR, the kind that he won't need to worry about upgrading for the foreseeable future.

The current list of the parts is here : https://no.pcpartpicker.com/user/jhonnioak/saved/#view=KGgZJx

The graphics card here is listed as a 3060 because it's the only one we could find in stock somewhere, but eventually he would like to get a 3080 instead. Overall I like the build, but I'm hesitant about a few components:

- PSU : He first wanted to get a Corsair HX1000i, but I thought that for a bit more he could get a Seasonic Prime TX 1000 instead. I think Seasonic is superior when it comes to PSUs, but I might be wrong. Also, I suggested he could downgrade to a 850W PSU but the ones he found costed more than the 1000W.

- Mobo : I know nothing about motherboards, so I don't know if that one is a sensible choice or not

- CPU : When we tried putting the Ryzen 9 5900X, it said that there would be a BIOS issue with the mobo. Do you think there's a significant performance difference between the 3900X and the 5900X? Is it worth aiming for the 5900X or the 3900X is ok?

Otherwise, what do you think about the build in itself? Are there some of the components that could be changed?

Thanks in advance for your help!

He really does not need 64GB of ram. Just go for 2x16 at 3600mhz.
You don't need more than... 650W? 1000W is extremley overkill. If he plans to get a 3080 850W is good

There is NO reason to get 1000W for a 3060. The recommend PSU for the 3060 is 600W.

This is a much better build with a MUCH better GPU and a more reasonable PSU. I live in the US, so let me know if any of the MSRP/prices are correct.

Please explain why someone need a 12core CPU in a gaming rig?  Because they can?

I also see everyone pairing 5950x's with 3090's and I am completely boggled.

The is a significant performance difference between the 3900X and 5900X. Ifnyounwant a high end rig get a 5900X.

There is little point in pairing ddr4-4000 with a 5900X.

The Dark Rock Pro 4 comes with thermal compound. There should be no need for more.

I'd suggest a better motherboard. It includes a feature to upgrade the bios without a cpu installed so any warning about bios flashing can be ignored.

Nvidia recommends a 750W psu for systems using the RTX 3080. So an 850W unit is more than enough. I suggest the excellent RM850X. There really isn't any need for a Platinum or Titanium efficiency psu unless electrical rate in your area are super high.

Optical drives are rare these days. Unless the user has a need, it can be left out.

The anti-kilowatt power supply slander has gone on for too long 😆 ! Unfortunately that one says it's out of stock everywhere so it doesn't matter anyway.

As long is it doesn't turn out looking like this I will most likely give my stamp of approval. Why do i detest this build? First of all, the case is gigantic, so big, in fact, the empire state building would easily fit within the confines of case itself. Also, it looks a bit like something you might find at arcade in the 90s and could very well be a distant cousin to the pinball machine at your local pizza place.

I agree with the others but I would also suggest a different case for better airflow since it might get pretty toasty in there

Airflow through that case should be of no concern, you will see this can be substantiated once you get a look at all the fans....
