Is Thermal Pad Sucks ?

So long story short i bought a cheapo thermal pad that the seller said can be use for CPU, and last night i tried thermal pad. Before i use the thermal pad, the temp of the cpu and the gpu is around 30 to 45 degree, and after i use the thermal pad the cpu temp is increasing but i think its still acceptable around 40 to 50 degree. But when i try to apply it on the gpu, the temp is already at 60 degree when idle and when i tried to run portal 2 the gpu is thermal throttling way too fast and go to 100 degree in 3 second and my pc died immediately. After that its obvious i'm changing it back to thermal paste. So thermal pad is that bad or its just a cheap stuff problem ?

Is it a thermal pad, or a thermal super thin little graphite sheet? If its a pad, like is squishy and thick, that is not at all acceptable to use for a GPU or CPU; they just do not have the thermal transfer efficiency, and are very thick which impedes heat transfer. If it was a graphite sheet, it should have been fine enough, although for the GPU it very well may have been too thin.

 

Definitely just use paste, why did you even try this in the first place?

some thermal pads are acceptable for a high power chip like a cpu or gpu, the issue isnt so much that a thermal pad has worse thermal conductivity than paste, the issue is one of distance. the less distance there is between the cpu and the cooler, the better the thermal transfer will be.

 

for example there's graphite thermal pads that are designed for CPU's (and i suppose GPU's?) that sort of compare to a lower end thermal paste. but the trick here is that they're a very high thermal conductivity, and they are VERY thin. any sort of thickness to whatever thermal interface material you're using on a CPU or GPU is a huge problem.
