Replacing a 4690K

Doug_Dangger

Budget (including currency): $500

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Existing part I already have or reuse:

Antec 900 Case

EVGA 750 Bronze Modular

1070FE

Thinking about the components pictured.  A good upgrade?  32GB ram might be overkill but since they're dirt cheap I was like why not.  I paid almost $200 for 2 8GB ddr3 sticks years ago 😄

I paid $180 at Micro Center for 2x8GB DDR4-3200 Cl16 in Feb.2019 when the DRAM prices were really high...that was horrible.

Overall, the motherboard will be fine and is pretty decent; X470 chipset, extra features. Cheaper than a B450 Tomahawk. Although, how about DDR4-3200 CL16 RAM modules?? 3000MHz is low and with CL16 timings.

Might as well go for max and do 3600 then

Might as well get those extra couple % of performance over 3200 for a couple $ extra.

True, just hopeful that the memory controller will handle 3600 as I know Ryzen's can be very "selective" about RAM speeds.

They are pretty good about 8gb and even 16gb sticks now. However the moment you go quad dimm with 16gb (or higher) or dual dimm with 32gb it gets wonky to say the least. Basically it's on good luck then with dimms that aren't on the supported list. quad dimms on 3000 series is also a bit hit or miss but most of the time works.

Does it make that big of a difference?  I'm no ram expert.

Will the 3600 work with this board?  I don't have an older Ryzen chip and not too keen on borrowing one.  I just want things to work out of the box.

DDR4-3000 CL16 is slower than DDR4-3200 CL16. It's about ~0.533ms slower (10.533ms vs 10.0ms of 3200 CL16). Also, Ryzen favors higher frequency RAM sticks and you lose performance on the table with 3000.

3600 will work with the motherboard. This is the sweet spot for Ryzen actually. Try to stick with DDR4-3600 CL16 or CL18 sticks, but preferably the former.

Thanks.  I'm looking at this now (picture below).

I remember what I paid for with my setup (Fry's, before they turned to crap).

4690K $200

EVO 212 Cooler $30

240GB SSD $80

2 8GB ddr3  $200

ECS board $80

------------------------------

Total = $590

Amazing how far we've come.

I know it quite is with performance. I used to rock a 4790K until Feb.2019 (when I got the overpriced RAM) and the leap in performance was amazing. I was at a Fry's once on vacation when visiting a family friend a couple years ago, was disappointing to say the least.

That build is looking good so far. RAM prices seem to have went up a little bit since the holidays.
